A direct descendant of George Washington was held last night in a New York jail, facing extradition to France on charges that he beat a man into a coma with a bottle.
John Augustine Washington V, a history student at Oxford University, is accused of smashing the bottle over the head of Colin Hall, a fellow American, on July 24 in a bar in the French resort of St Tropez.
He was arrested in New York this week after federal police were tipped off about his whereabouts. If extradited, Mr Washington will be tried in Draguignan, southern France, where he is accused of assault and battery with a weapon, which carries a possible five-year jail sentence and £53,000 fine.
Mr Hall, 36, underwent emergency brain surgery and spent five days in a coma after the attack at the Caves du Roy club. He had been chatting to Laura Clegg, a friend of Mr Washington.
Speaking about the attack for the first time, Mr Hall said yesterday: I was as close to being dead as you can be without dying.
He said that Mr Washington has shown complete dishonour and cowardice, both by hitting me from behind and sneaking out of the country while I was in a coma.
Mr Washington was initially held by the nightclub bouncers and questioned at the local police station before being released. Once the gravity of the attack became apparent, police issued an international alert that he could be extremely dangerous.

Did George and Martha have any children?
No. Martha had 2 prior to the marriage.
I think he adopted Martha's children, IIRC.
The man mentioned in this article would be a descendent of Washington's half-brother Lawrence, or perhaps a cousin...
Thanks. I was quite certain this Brit was wrong.
thanks.
thanks.

"Mr Washington, who is 43 but professes to be 26"
Everything about this guy, from his way-overblown "the fifth" name, to the lying about his age, points to a con artist. I have serious doubts, as to whether this man is related to George Washington in any way, shape or form.
Me too, and I'm wondering is he gay? Calls to mind Six Degrees of Separation.
No need to read any further. There are NO direct descendents of George Washington.
There are NO direct descendents of George Washington.
That man sounds perfect for nomination to the democratic party- did someone say party? Party? BYOB!!! http://sacredscoop.com
Federal police? We ain't got no federal police. That's Mexico. Hmmm. Illegal immigration is worse than I thought.
If it were possible, it would be a big shock to know our ancestors, and it would be a bigger shock to know our descendants. It's merciful that we can't.
Thank you for your tagline.
Jacky left 4 children whom he had with his wife Nelly (nee Calvert from Maryland) and George and Martha raised 2 of them at Mount Vernon ("Little" Nelly and George Washington Parke Custis). The latter was the closest thing The General ever had to a son (other than Alex Hamilton or the Marquise de Lafayette) and this bounder over in England is, perhaps, a descendant of GWP Custis.
I sent a Letter to the Editor of The Times.
Let's see if they print it.
I was in error when I said above that he could be a descendant of George Washington Parke Custis. If he were, he'd be a Custis.
D'oh!
The original John Augustus Washington was a brother of George.
Incidentally, I live within a quarter of a mile of a house that was supposedly owned in part by Lawrence Washington.
Lawrence was most interesting. His wife Anne Fairfax was half black, the daughter of William and a Bahamian woman.
"Witnesses said Colins attacker accused him of taking the girl away then lunged as he partied with other rich tourists in the early hours of Monday.
University websites describe first year law student Laura Clegg, from Nottingham, as one of the fittest girls at Oxford. A pal, who asked not to be named, said: Shes really popular with the guys."

" When The Mail on Sunday approached his 86-year-old father John Augustine Washington IV for a comment, he asked to see a copy of a news story about the incident. After reading it intently Mr Washington Snr, who lives in Maryland, looked shocked and when asked to confirm whether the man in the picture was his son, he would only say: "No comment."
For the Washingtons, the news must come as a double source of sadness. That their son should be reduced to violent brawling in a French nightclub is one thing, but the fact that he is a descendant of America's first President is quite another. It was not, one suspects, the outcome they expected when they sent their only son to Oxford.
It is a feeling that Laura's parents will identify with all too readily. "
