Appearing on this Boxing Day edition of the Today show to plug tonight's airing of "In the Shadow of the American Dream," the latest in the Tom Brokaw Reports series, the former Nightly News anchor offered a variety of views on the subject of illegal immigration straight out of the amnesty-crowd playbook.

Annotated excerpts:
Why not? And if sending illegals home isn't the solution, how about drying up the jobs here so they will have their own motivation to return home?
Really? How much would it cost to build, say, a high-tech, 20-foot tall/20-foot deep fence along the border, and how much of the illegal immigration would it stop? I'm guessing a lot.
Ah, the classic formulation. But says who, and at what wages?
Really? High school kids won't work for $16/hour and would rather flip burgers for half that? Data please, Tom.
Except you just said - and history proves - that Mexico doesn't want to solve the problem. Which makes it our problem. To quote Mark Steyn, this sounds like a job for America, alone.

Today show ping.
Brokaw does not even understand the meaning of his own books. How can we expect him to understand the illegal immigration problem?
This is a gift to the politicians who want to pass "comprehensive" immigration reform which will be no such thing.
Brokaw is doing the advance PR work.
Really?
So what are we going to do when we legalize the illegals and make them Americans?
Mmmm?
Go after the employers of illegals.
Make it a crime to knowingly employ an illegal.
Make it illegal to rent or sell housing to an illegal (and enforce it).
No work and no place to live and the problem will fix itself.
Gee, it worked before sending them all back. If it wasn't multiculturists loons it would still be working today.
With the dims stealing control, now the MSM declares we MUST HELP THEM--and the children, of course.
MSM's opinions of you: SUCKERS!!!!.
GMTA - see first annotation in article.
High school kids never did this for full time work anyway. That was for uneducated, low skilled labor. Just what he's advocating. Let's bring in more uneducated people to build our houses and when the houses are built they get to go on welfare because they can't do anything else.
Importing Poverty: Immigration and Poverty in the United States: A Book of Charts
How about a 30% tax on all money sent back to Mexico together with restrictions on the cash carried from the US to Mexico in person??
They still dig ditches by hand? Who knew? Maybe I ought to build a ditch-digging machine and solve the illegal problem and become a millionaire to boot. I'll call it...the backhoe.
Illegal aliens don't threaten Tom Brokaws privileged life style. They tend his garden..care for his grandchildren and do his laundry..all at slave wages.
The dems know that every 20 anchor babies equals one new teacher, one probation officer, more section 8 housing etc etc. More power to the govt.
Republicans just look at the cheap labor to feed the bottom line. They are both working to turn the US into a third world country.
If you don't believe it..just go to LA and see. Or Miami or Houston ..
Especially picking cotton.
I haven't seen anyone carrying bricks in a long time either.
The sh*t that passes for brains crowd once again tutors the stupified masses. They broke the law... Brocaw... and they're breaking a lot more of them while they're in here. They bleed our nation white at the local level... while sending the lions-share of their savings back to the rat-hole they came from.
Like that other idiot Cronkite, his credentials boil down to: I was on TV (daily, reading a text cuz of my distinguished looking gray hair and good voice).
I'd rather do that than work 1/3 of a work day in an office.
Slavery still exists in Africa. Perhaps we can import from there.
But it still feels good.
"You can't get high school kids to earn $14-16 to dig ditches and carry bricks and do the hard work. They don't want to do it. They'd rather be at their computer or work in fast food stores."
Tom clearly has too much cash in the bank and too connections to life outside of the gated community. High school kids generally don't have access to much more than minimum wage. Hell, I know a lot of adults that would love to earn $32K a year digging ditches, carrying bricks, etc.
games.
funny, I see plenty willing to work for $5 and going in the army... but plenty of politicians and liberals not willing to take any responsibility and do their jobs in DC and accademia despite the millions poured down their throats...
You know what, why don't we give them what they want and enlist the Mexicans to fire Brokaw and all those losers...
Brokaw was always retarded, and now he is gone senile.
The looney leftist with a speech impediment hardly ever was even a decent news reader. I remember him endlessly marveling out loud about the amount of balloons coming down at a political convention: "Wow, that's a lot of balloons coming down from the ceiling!....I can't believe it. Is this a lot of balloons or what?"
The man was clearly mesmerized by the shiny objects floating in front of him.
A lobotomy at birth?
Slavery is still one of the few things that is still "illegal" in this country and rightfully so.
Ummm ... The libs don't want you thinking and using your head :0)
Which is why they play this PR war of words
Your post just about sums it up. Sad, but it is too late. The only way would be to cut them off totally.None of us are going to get a choice.

30%?
A total tax burden would be a cut for me if I was able to achieve 50%..
Thanks for the research - Brokaw's number struck me as low. Good to have the proof - I will edit original NB item accordingly.
Of course a wall will not stop every single one. But it sure will reduce the problem, although perhaps not as effective as placing land mine. And yes, sending them back will work and should be done.
The solution is a combination of several factors:
*remove all perks - loads of them come here to rip off the welfare system and keep producing "anchor babies"
*jail and/or fine the employers of illegals
*round up and deport illegals, along with legal immigrants committing crimes or demanding welfare
*no amnesty, which will only encourage more of them - illegals should be forever be prevented from getting citizenship
We need to get organized and fight those in Washington who are eager to surrender to this invasion.
""They're filling jobs that Americans don't want to fill anymore.""
Yeah like roofing, contstruction, factory and any other job that they will accept half the pay for.
How come so few people seem to understand this little fact?
susie
If all of these illegals were not here, Americans WOULD take those jobs.
Mr. Brokaw thinks America doesn't need borders.
He has forgotten that America is still a sovereign nation, and not a public park.
No, actually they still do some ditch digging by hand on construction sites. Backhoes are used, surely, but some trenches for underground pipes require a smaller, or shallower, 'almost custom' trench only a shovel can make.
The 'problem' arises due to the backfilling steps and different materials required per the specifications. A trench too big or deep and your backfill costs go through the roof. So some 'grunts' (Laborers or Apprentices) grab the shovels and start digging.
I personally run into this for HVAC piping but some smaller plumbing pipes require hand trenching too. And when I was Chief Estimator we always 'tried' to exclude Excavation & Backfill from the Bid. Most times the G.C. accepted it, sometimes no (which sucked).
And how many rungs up the ladder is exploiting illegal immigrants from slavery?
Not saying I associate with all of Brokaw's brayings, but as an employer in the metal roofing business In North Texas, I have actually offerred 14 to 15 dollar per hour jobs to young men working behind the counter at fast food joints. I have never found a taker. Admittedly, that is during the summers when willing English speaking metal roofing help is near impossible to find anywhere. In a desperate situation, I went and got almost certainly illegal help, though documents provided indicated otherwise, but I have had to keep my business small and slower because the willing and experienced legal help is rare and older, and my competition isn't as conflicted about hiring illegals, or are big enough that they restrict themselves to higher end jobs with big margins to cover higher wages and benefits. They scoop the shrinking number of willing young citizens along with the military. I started in the '80s and found that the best young workers came from rural areas as I did, but today, even small town kids see outside labor as 'Mexican work', regardless of pay. They like the money, but can't imagine themselves doing the work.
They need not be here, however, being here illegaly should have it's disadvantages.
Uncanny knack you have to morph postings into a subject irrelevant to the post in the first place.
Using illegal aliens for labor is the modern day replacement for slavery.
Mr. Brokaw,
A lot of American citizens who aren't supposed to want to do dirty work showed up for jobs at the Swift meat plant when they cleaned out the illegals .
It would be nice if the problem would fix itself if it followed your list of suggestions, but the problem is unfixable as it stands. Pursuing the most logical course that you suggest would only compound a problem that is being foisted on us in such a way that the only "solution" is the one the current Administration keeps helpfully putting off until some kind of nonexistent consensus is reached on some far-off day when a comprehensive plan is arrived at. Get it? The "PROBLEM" is NOT SUPPOSED TO BE FIXED. WE are supposed to be fixed.
It already is a crime. The problem is that the law is rarely enforced and when it is, proving "knowingly" is extremely difficult. What they ought to do is to make it a crime to hire illegals without regard to actual knowledge, like statutory rape.

You stay classy, Brokaw. STFU is a very classy move.
Because so many Americans are physically as well as intellectually lazy.
''Current legislative proposals that would grant amnesty to illegal immigrants and increase future low-skill immigration would represent the largest expansion of the welfare state in 30 years.
Obviously what the liberal left, aided and abetted by the corporate right, are intending!
Willful ignorance of Israel's wall keeping the parasites out. The Berlin Wall, which he possibly might have heard of, did pretty well too.
He'd probably play word games on being challenged, though. "No, I meant 100% effective..."
If you really listened to these dems you woulod think we could dissolve the government entirely. They argue that law enforcement is a wasted effort. Likewise they never expect results from their social programs and don't even measure them. Anarchy anyone?
Brokaw is a cloistered liberal. He lives in the east coast echo chamber of socialist blather. The MSM is a prolonged anxiety attack.
