"I don't think that anyone is arguing that his addictions and arrests are qualifications for greatness. I'm pretty sure they are talking about the records he made between 1965 and 1976. I don't think his behavior should be overlooked and he be put on a pedastel just because he made a few records either. One's "greatness" is the sum of ones entire lifes work. The negatives cancel out the positives.
But, like all things of this nature, because he was black it's automatic that all the negatives be erased and the glory reserved for saints be poored upon his memory.

You got that spelled out perfectly.
Here we go again. No doubt this will be headlined for the rest of the week. I bet it starts in about an hour with "the view" with fat mouth Rosie-O-dumbell spewing a loud and obnoxious trilogy loaded with praise of how the poor oppressed boy dragged himself against all odds out from under all that repression and changed the world with music.(sigh)

More accurately, there would not have been funk had Brown and Sly Stone not created the style. Brown also helped create breakbeat dance music, of which hip hop is a variety. I read that the Rolling Stones had to perform after Brown at a pop festival and were so impressed with his performance that they decided to emulate his intensity and thus began their transformation into the current band.

POW! The content in the link you provided hits the proverbial nail squarely on the head, and sinks it with one crushing blow. A good read and accurate take on one despicable charlatan named Sharpton. What a subhuman (never mind.)
I guess it's lights, camera, action... ;0)

"There wouldn't have been a Michael Jackson or Prince or hip-hop if not for James Brown." What a cultural loss that would have been. I liked Michael Jackson as the kid with the Jackson 5.
For better or worse, he and I are the same age, and Michael didn't begin his descent into weirdness until around 1980.

IMHO neither one of them are a great lose to anyone.....

They are so predictable at honoring the dead. Lets see, the latest spectacles were at Paul Wellstone's 'memorial' service, Coretta Scott King's 'memorial' service, and postulating just a bit, but with confidence, James Brown's 'memorial' service, where the good caring simple folk will follow the blueprint.
You got it bro- Rosie will tell her viewers how she remembers chasing bullfrogs with James Brown when they were kids, and how he pulled her pigtails. Sniff, sniff, and now... he's... GONE!
Unless hell freezes over, I won't be able to verify my guess work, by watching the dynamic bull dyke at work on the View; I'll have to read about it 'all over the Internet.' Oh the inhumanity of it all. ;0)

"from one church burning to the next."
I'm taking this a couple of ways...
The civil rights movement (and the bus is full of activists) is on the trail of church burners/church burnings, bringing to light the injustices done to church folk.
OR...
Firebugs out to stir up civil unrest by creating abominations against church folk, and inciting racial tensions/unrest, (by setting houses of worship on fire, and seeing to it that whitey gets the blame.)

I mildly enjoyed his music, but I do not share the high opinion of him that others do. Constantly having scrapes with the law and beating one's wife doesn't qualify you for greatness. Got up on the wrong side of the rock, I see. Man you are crude!

Before it's all over, we will hear at least one story about clinton meeting/listening to/knowing/being inspired by/ James Brown. Sharpton mentioned his first trip ever to the White House was with Brown to meet Reagan and then VP GHWB for MLK Day. Clintler will not be able to stand not having his name mentioned in the coverage.

That's interesting. I'd like to find out when that was.
It's interesting that the Rolling Stones have become a better live act concurrent with their precipitous decline in songwriting quality.
