Because the guys on the other side won't be good boys and stop fighting, Helen. Next question?

The problem with your scenario is Iraq's economy would collapse. If nothing can get in, then nothing would get out either and Iraq would not be able to trade with their neighbors. And in the end the terrorists would just move stuff across the large swaths of unguarded desert that we simply don't have enough troops to guard either in the east or west. So in the end, really my statement is still correct. I really doubt much of the material supplying the terrorists is coming across the border checkpoints where guards search most vehiles anyway. Much of it comes from the huge weapons caches that Saddam hid throughout Iraq before his fall. Iraq was basically one big weapons dump.

This is what largely supplies the terrorists with some incidental amount of arms and weapondry coming across. The biggest issue with the borders are the people crossing them to come in to man the terrorist forces. That is difficult to control since as I say most of these people just dress as civilians anyway.

If we want better control of the men getting in to help keep the insurgency going, then we have to go after the Syrian and Iranian govts. to motivate them to stop the influx of foreign nationals into their territory that are intending to pass into Iraq, whatever form that pressure may take.

Mecca, of course.

It won't be long before we see a Sunni/Shia/Al Qaeda war. Nobody likes the Sauds. Osama thinks they're decadent and the fact that the "holy cities" are in Sunni lands is an affront to the Shia.

But, frankly, Islam has a captial city, even if the west isn't willing to attack it.

someone should send this old camelhumper a copy of Bush's address at the National Cathedral on 9/14/01 when he told the nation that the war ahead would be long, that much would happen that would not be seen ... he laid it all out. Did anyone in the MSM listen?

Al Qaida does have realty, cities, etc. But they are owned by teh Iranians, the Saudi, nad smaller segments are owned in Damascus, Tripoli, etc.

The Islamo-terrorists are funded by those in hte places mentioned in the above paragraph. As President Bush so well said, if you support a terrorist, you are a terrorist.

Nuke 'em all - Nuke 'em now!

The senile old bag means that the Iraq War has lasted longer than direct American involvement in WWII.

IIRC WWII lasted from 9/39 to 8/45, so we got a way to go.
;O)

"In all due respect, that is total bullcr@p!"

LOL! No offense taken. :)

I think we pretty much agree here. The other poster was referring to "stopping an ideology from spreading". That is what my comment that you quoted was about.

"I think you answered your own question. Any fight to keep an existing ideology from spreading is never-ending. That means actual fighting over this issue forever. No doubt you've seen the Iranian, Saudi, Palesinian, etc. TV spots. Hatred and murder has been ingrained in their children for generations and generations."

A fight to stop it's spread is a never ending battle. That's essentially what we are doing now, IMO. I was pointing out the drawback (never ending) to NOT crushing the ideology. If you'll check out my other posts on this thread you'll see that I have different opinions on that.

I think my suggestion was pretty specific to seal the Iranian and Syrian boarders with Iraq. That still leave Turkey, Jordan, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia as open trading partners. Plus, Basra access to the Persian Gulf means Iraqis can trade oil with the rest of the world.

It is clear that whatever option to win is chosen, more US troops will be involved. My idea is to concentrate them on sealing the boarders rather than the roving Baghdad police actions. Our advantages are air power and night operations. Air power should discourage anyone from crossing the two boarders mentioned above. Once again, nothing crosses; not a truck, no car, not a single pilgrim or banana. Nothing. The insurgency suffocates in six months.
