WASHINGTON, Dec. 25 — Counting on the support of the new Democratic majority in Congress, Democratic lawmakers and their Republican allies are working on measures that could place millions of illegal immigrants on a more direct path to citizenship than would a bill that the Senate passed in the spring.
The lawmakers are considering abandoning a requirement in the Senate bill that would compel several million illegal immigrants to leave the United States before becoming eligible to apply for citizenship.
The lawmakers are also considering denying financing for 700 miles of fencing along the border with Mexico, a law championed by Republicans that passed with significant Democratic support.

Unless the Senate falls in line, it sounds like they are proposing another bill that will remain in committee forever.
My contempt for politicians (R or D) grows every day. Of course this day would happen.

I think all they care about is "buying" that next vote....and to heck with whatever happens to this country.

Too bad we couldn't have stuck to the original version of Congress where regular citizens were elected to periodically go to D.C. and vote the wishes of their community, and then return to their regular work be it farmer, blacksmith, merchant etc.
Our founding fathers had the right idea but I don't think they ever foresaw that some less than honorable people would try to make a career out of it.
I think they saw Congress as a sort of "board of directors" who would hold periodic meetings and then go back home and let the other two branches of "full-timers" run the country, following the guidance they provided at their meeting.
You get no argument from me.
The point was.....they are supposed to care about America and its citizens. That used to be the reason for doing "public service".
Our whole political system is perverted and twisted now.
Unfortunately (for them) I still work under the system that our founders intended. If many others did also, the political system might start changing back to what it was intended to be.
The Bush administration's tremendous failures on this issue will tarnish his legacy with future generations. Many parts of our nation are already crappy psuedo third world hispanic holes thanks to illegal immigration and in two hundred years I fully expect us to be a hispanic nation. Bush had a chance to preserve American culture and society and he failed badly.

While this sounds nice, I don't know if it would work today. Running a modern state is staggeringly complex and I don't think it could be done part time like that. Of course it isn't like things are working well with congress at the moment anyway.

Dear Mr. President:
We write to urge you to seize the opportunity during your upcoming discussions with Mexican President Vicente Fox to make clear this nation’s determination to establish and enforce an immigration policy that celebrates our immigrant heritage, secures our borders, draws a bright line between legal and illegal aliens, and rejects any and all forms of amnesty.
We trust and urge that any agreement reached during these discussions and any implementing proposals you may subsequently bring to Congress will honor what we consider to be bedrock principles of a sane, effective, productive immigration policy:
· Our national security against terrorism must be built on secure borders, and we intend to invest whatever manpower and technological resources are required to close our borders to terrorists, drug smugglers, and illegal aliens;
· Our national allegiance is to one indivisible nation, and we will not allow or condone the balkanization of the United States of America but instead embrace efforts to help documented newcomers become part of the American family;
· Our core belief that “reverence for the laws” must be, as Lincoln said, the “political religion of the nation,” which means we can no longer blur the line between legal and illegal immigration and we must vigorously enforce all our immigration laws;
· Our nation’s economic security and that of our workers, particularly low-income and underemployed Americans, must not be undercut by exploited, unskilled illegal alien workers;
· Our national treasure is of, by, and for Americans – native or naturalized, but in all cases legal citizens – and should not be further depleted to aid, abet, or encourage persons who are here illegally; and
· Our previous experiments with direct or indirect amnesty have failed, resulting in more, not less, illegal immigration because amnesty rewards lawbreakers and discriminates against those who seek legal entry into this country; therefore, every form and vestige of amnesty must be rooted out of federal laws, regulations and policies.
We also believe you must make clear to President Fox that we expect Mexico to be an integral part of this effort. For far too long Mexico has acted more as an accomplice in illegal immigration than a partner in preventing it. And while we sympathize with Mexico’s problems – its statist economy, hugely inefficient public sector, laws that limit foreign investment, and inability to create enough jobs for its people, etc. – it nonetheless has a responsibility to help control this runaway problem that is largely of its own making.
If the Mexican government can’t – or won’t – make necessary and long-overdue changes to provide economic opportunity for its own people, then it should at least help pay for the burden on the American taxpayer that it has created and, indeed, encouraged.
By reaffirming our fidelity to these self-evident truths, we can seize this moment of opportunity to resolve one of the primary and growing threats to our nation’s future. We urge you to act now to rescue an immigration policy that is failing the American people, imposing enormous costs on our economy, and leaving us more vulnerable to terrorism.

Did our lawmakers get the message in Nov about amnesty?
Well the only silver lining to this (if there is one) is that in 2008 the dims will be voted out for making the biggest mistake they could make ( thank goodness) the third rail issue. ILLEGALS!
Nothing like allowing tax cheaters and freeloaders and drug smugglers and identity theives to become US citizens.
The higher the "amnesty for illegals" immigration population gets to become legalized throughout the U.S., the more the increases of registered Democrats and registered independents who will end up voting for Democrats and not vote for Republicans at every political level. There's no way that conservatives will truly be able to successfully match the pace of new voters who will be fully supporting the Democratic Party and supporting the political left for always! Good-bye U.S.A.! It was nice to know ya!
A disastor in the making. Mark my words: I will NEVER vote for anyone who votes for such a bill.
