While Blair may have exercised a little CYA after his initial comments, I believe in academic circles, where Latin is tossed about to impress drunk friends, the technical term for Blair's statement is "Lodo Del Crappo".

Time to get with reality...

The Taleban were the most strict adherents of Islam, and here's the result:

"Zarmeena's children and the family of Zarmeena's husband were present in the stadium and all of her children were crying loudly for their mother. Several minutes before the execution, her husband's family announced to the Taliban that they forgave Zarmeena. But the Taliban said that it was impossible to stop the execution because they had already announced it to thousands of people. Islamic law allows the family to forgive the killer but the Taliban did not pay any attention to the law."

"To me, the most remarkable thing about the Koran is how progressive it is."

Whaaaaat? Either he is being blackmailed, someone in the family is kidnapped and held for ransom by Muslims, he feels the urge of kissing ass, he went mad or he became a Muslim.

Anyone any other suggestions?

John;

Are you pulling my leg or have you gone out of your mind?

The rest of his essay is good, but he gave Muslims yet another excuse to not reform when he said that. Yes, the remark was probably intended to "reach out" to "moderate" Muslims, but it was a huge mistake to do so. The "moderates" are those who give to charities that support violent jihad. The "moderates" are those who are trying to use America's ( and Britain's) laws against non-Muslims. The "moderates" are waging political and cultural jihad.

Islam belongs in the trash bin of its bloody history.

Quotes from an 1899 book by Winston Churchill, "The River War", in which he describes Muslims he apparently observed during Kitchener's campaign in the Sudan...

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men."

"Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome."

-Sir Winston Churchill (The River War, first edition, Vol. II, pages 248-50) London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1899

Blair comes up with this gibberish and Bush goes around like a parrot claiming Islam is the "religion of peace."

John Howard is the only leader that appears to recognize Islam for what it is.

So-called progressives exist in some irrational space that might as well be the 7th century.

LOL! Rumor has it that Charlie converted some time ago (and frankly, it wouldn't surprise me).

But I am a little surprised at Blair. I thought this was a joke when I first saw it posted.

"...trying to return Judaism and Christianity to their origins, much as reformers attempted to do with the Christian church centuries later."

Interesting that he compares Islam to Protestantism. What a lot of people apparently haven't grasped, is that the spiritual foundation of the present jihad movement, radical Wahhabi Islam, IS the Islamic edition of the Reformation.

They've got the equivalent of:

They even have the destruction of statues, icons, and pictorial art, and -- like 16th century Europe--- the triggering of brutal sectarian warfare.

What they don't have is the teachings of Christ, which could the the basis of a civilization of love. Their pedophile slave-trading warlord? Not even close.

"But I am a little surprised at Blair. I thought this was a joke when I first saw it posted."

The only reason you would be surprised is if you have not really listened to anything he has said in the pass. I've seen some ridiculous representations (mainly projection on the posters part) of Blair's opinions on this board over the years. This seems based entirely on the fact of committing British troops to Iraq (which, in Blair's worldview was entirely consistent with his reasons for agitating so hard for intervention in Kosovo, an intervention that, strangely enough, seems somewhat less popular on this board).

Indeed, I was once told to 'go back to DU' (though that meant nothing to me at the time) by a poster who I ridiculed for their suggestion that the US constitution should be amended to allow the Republican Party to draft Blair as a future Presidential candidate! Hilarious stuff!
