There are still a lot of questions about the suspected drunk driver who killed a woman and two of her children while driving under the influence on Christmas Eve.
Carlos Prieto is in the Salt Lake County Jail. In the past couple of hours we've learned that he's been in Utah at least a couple of years and that he may be in the country illegally.
Prieto was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion on vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and driving without a license. Prosecutors are still screening the case, and formal charges are expected tomorrow morning.
Police arrested Prieto on Christmas Eve morning, when he ran a red light at the intersection of 5400 South and 700 East in Murray, and broadsided a car carrying the Ceran family. Cheryl Ceran, her son, Ian, and daughter, Julianna, died. Gary Ceran and two other children survived.
Jail documents reveal that when police arrived at the scene, Prieto smelled strongly of alcohol and had glassy, bloodshot eyes. Prieto admitted to police, he had five beers before getting behind the wheel.
A check of court records didn't bring up any previous arrests, but we learned that two years ago Prieto was cited for speeding and driving without a license. That case was resolved in Salt Lake County Justice Court, after he paid a fine.
A spokesperson for Immigration and Customs Enforcement told me they have interviewed Prieto and believe he is a Mexican national and here illegally.
ICE has issued a hold on him, so he can be turned over to them once the criminal against him is resolved.
There should be a national registry of illegal aliens who kill and maim US citizens. There must be hundreds of these incidents every year. Far more people get killed by illegals than die from e coli or tornadoes, and we ought to realize the real dangers we face every day from their invasion of our country and our government's stubborn refusal to protect its citizens from this scourge.
Totally agree. Actively search for the worst and flagrant law-breakers and work your way up. It all starts with one and they present themselves every day.
I'll bet dollars to donuts that more American Citizens have died at the hands of illegal immigrants than have died in the War on Terror. I'll give you the 9/11 victims, too.
Put them on TV in a "Survivor" type show, winner gets to stay, losers stay on a remote island with Prez Bush playing the role of Mr. Roarke, welcoming them to "Illegal Island".
It probably won't be until an executive or member of Congress is involved in some tragedy that anything will be done.
That how people become Congresscritters. They run on a platform: "my ___ was killed by a___ so I ran to promote/stop ___." I wonder when someone will step up?
Rep. Hupp comes to mind in TX.
See tagline.
Tuesday was Clarissa Ceran's 19th birthday. She should have celebrated at home with her mother, father, siblings and friends.
Instead, Clarissa spent her birthday sitting up in her hospital bed for the first time since early Sunday. She also took two small steps forward and back and was able to wiggle her toes. Many would consider those steps a miracle.
"We were absolutely thrilled to see that," her father, Gary Ceran, said. "It's absolutely astonishing to me not just she lived, but I really thought her legs would be lost. When you look at the vehicle and her door and how the car is pushed from the passenger side to the middle of the car, it's absolutely amazing she's alive. It's nothing short of miraculous she even has legs."

This President is misguided.
Gary Ceran
That's a safe bet, and worse than you think.

Statistically, 25 Americans die every day at the hands of illegal aliens. To put that into perspective, more people die at the hands of illegal aliens every year than the combination of all the victims of the bombing of the Marine Barracks in Lebanon, the first World Trade Center bombing, the Oklahoma City bombing, the Persian Gulf War, the USS Cole Attack, the U.S. Embassy bombings worldwide, the victims that died in both World Trade Center bombings, at the Pentagon and the brave men and women of Flight 93.
Officers also administered a nystagmus test, a field sobriety test used by checking a driver's eyes, which he failed. Prieto was driving on an expired license. This was his third DUI arrest, according to jail records.
Gary Ceran has now lost seven of his nine children, his wife, his brother and his mother in recent years. Five of his children died as infants due to cancer or premature births. His mother, who lived in the basement of his house for 14 years, also died a couple of years ago, the same year his brother died.

sadly, you're right........
Over 19,000 Americans have died a violent death at the hands of murderous illegal aliens since 9/11 (12 a day).*
Over 20,000 Americans have died at the hands of uninsured drunk driving illegal aliens since 9/11 (13 a day).*
Over 13,000 American children are the victim of a sex crime at the hands of illegal aliens since 9/11 (8 a day).*
Less than 7,000 Americans have died on 9/11 and after due to terrorism, including those who died fighting terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan.
What is the bigger threat to Americans today, terrorist thugs or illegal aliens?

"This President is misguided."
I have to agree.
Oh, BS. An immigration policy is suppose to focus on, tada....IMMIGRATION! You're describing a war on terror, which we also are supposed to be doing. And it's more like 20 million aliens, thanks to your support for these lawbreakers.
"W's fault."
How long has it been since 9-11 and improved border security has hardly been improved.
Hey Caver, where do you live?
You must be talking about the accident on State St. in Columbus.
Both of those guys worked at Golden Corral.
The place is crawling with illegals.
That you say there are 20 million and not 12 million proves my point. A focus on everyone is no focus at all. The majority of illegals are good people and an asset to our society.
But a highly visible minority of illegals are clearly the problem. That is where our money, manpower and resources should be focused. It would take a very big government to focus on 20 million... or even 12 million.
