All yeoman warders are retired senior Warrant Officers with exemplary records. Typically they are not SAS or Royal Marines who command very high salaries as trainers or security consultants post service.
We had a blonde clerk at the cold storage where I worked decades ago. We'd get in a load of beef hearts, and she'd wonder outloud as to why anybody would freeze the vapors from those little honey-producing bees.
"Like all her peers in Warden Yeomanry, the female candidate is a Warrant Officer class one in the Royal Army. She is a Gunner specializing in weapons maintenance and repair. She has 22 years in service".
Well, good for her. All Englishmen and women should thank her for her service to her country and wish her well. Who ever she is I send her a big salute.
Stupid feminism is creeping everywhere.
So is her title Yeoperson Wardress?
And what if she is a vegetarian?
What's important is that they maintain the quality of their gin. (Good Gin Distillers, these Beefeaters.) :o)
What is the difference between a female European and a male European? Nothing. They are all suicidal.
Who cares about Europe or what Europe thinks? They have regulated themselves to irrelevance. Italy "disgusted" by the hanging of Saddam? Another example of why "classical" western civilization will die out.
Will they have to update the label on Beefeater Gin, for diversity?
And from her picture, she's built like a 14-year-old boy, only probably not so quick. I guess being physically able to do your job when the crunch comes is just so yesterday.
I guess it's a form of conspicuous consumption: Liberals want to show the world that we're so safe, we don't need guards (tough men) who can protect what they're guarding. Except the world isn't that safe. Especially not London.
I agree with most of what you wrote, only I'd point out that the UK isn't really part of Europe. And I think their performance in the war on terrorism has shown they've got the guts to fight for western values just like we do.
"Beef hearts"... "vapors from bees"
Oof!.....BAD pun alert. You are hereby sentenced to your own postscript - confined to a room festooned with outsize posters of Helen Thomas nude. Open your eyes, and scream every time.
No one will be listening...... GUARDS!!!!
There was the sweetest little blonde girl, about 7 years old, up front. As he did his spiel, several times he looked down at her a shouted in mock chastisement "Shall we hang you up by your little toes, you little urchin?!" or some such nonsense, drawing quiet laughter from the crowd. Didn't phase her a bit, she was utterly fascinated with him.
I would encourage anyone taking a tour of the Tower, hopefully not as a prisoner, will follow one of the Beefeaters around. And if you're lucky, you'll get the one my wife and I got last September. I can't remember his name, but he was an ex-sergeant major in the army and at one time guarded Rudolph Hess. His commentary during the tour was informative as well as hysterical. Also take the Big Bus tour of London, and ask for Alan Doyle as tour guide. Doyle could easily make it as a stand-up comedian.
Today the Yeoman Warders are responsible for the security of the Tower and its visitors. They control the gates and the Wharf and all areas open to the public except that the Jewel House and Armouries have their own internal staffs of Wardens. At one time Civil Police were on duty outside Jewel House and at the outer gates, but they were withdrawn in 1924. All Warders are now Special Constables of the Metropolitan Police. The Yeoman Warders also conduct public guided tours in the Tower throughout the day. What attributes would YOU look for in someone who was to have ultimate responsibility for the safety and security of the Tower and the Crown Jewels?
Profiles of some Yeoman Warders
I think the watch he's wearing breaks with a little tradition, too.
So she spent her career in maintenence?
Which picture are you looking at?
The partial shot is from 2006 - a man, not her.
Once you have committed yourself to a group that is all 50+ years of age, physical fitness requirements are pretty much down the drain.
Sounds like they work more as guides than as guards. And if they're allowed to carry, brute strength isn't a huge requirement, I'd think.
I have mixed feelings on things like this. Tradition is a beautiful thing, and I'm not sure I'd want that changed if I were one of them. But the folks who believe women can't possibly serve *any* role in the military - even basically administrative roles - get my goat.
