Calling themselves "The Sons of Al Anbar," thousands of young Iraqi males have volunteered to defend their cities, villages, homes and families from terrorists.

Geez, I wonder why the New York Times doesn't report this?

Agreed. Thanks for the target comment. I had not thought of that aspect.

>Sending more U.S. combat troops is simply sending more targets.<

With the state of political correctness in this country today, the touchy-feely, read 'em their rights philosophy of our leadership, I have to agree with Colonel North.

I think this "sectarian hatred" line is crap! There are people here in the US who still have strong feelings regarding the civil war. Take a look at Bosnia. How long were they under control and after the dictator died, it went to hell in a handbasket. I think we need to tell these people to get their act together or else. The next bombing against Americans, take one block in the city and decimate it. And if need be - God forgive me for saying this - decimate everyone in that block. You need to have the people more afraid of us then them. Winning hearts and minds - as far as I know - has never worked. Hell, it doesn't even work in the states in our crime riddern inner cities.

OK, so what exactly are we there for?

We are there to make them good neighbors and make them behave as a civilized country. You can try to change hearts and minds by building schools, handing out candy, providing medical treatment, etc. Or you can change hearts and minds by making them fear you and rat out the terrorist aholes that are tearing up their country.
