Iran with nuclear weapons is unacceptable, new House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told The Jerusalem Post hours after entering the party leadership position.
The Maryland Democrat said the view is shared by his party, rejecting assertions that the Democrats would be weaker than the Republicans on Iran.
He also said that the use of force against Teheran remained an option.
Hoyer, second only in the hierarchy of the House of Representatives to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is charged with articulating and strategizing on party policy.
He spoke to the Post on Thursday, the opening day of the 110th Congress, after making an appearance at the National Jewish Democratic Council reception honoring the six new Jewish members of Congress.
The council gathering was one of scores of events on Capitol Hill held to celebrate the start of the new session.
Hoyer is considered close to the Jewish community and many Israel supporters have hailed his elevation in the House.
He was one of the few non-Jewish lawmakers to attend the council reception.
Hoyer said the Democrats' position, like that of the Bush administration, was that preventing a nuclear-armed Iran had to be done through "discussions, negotiations, sanctions." Hoyer added that the US needed to work with the international community to block Teheran's nuclear ambitions.
At the same time, Hoyer said the use of force hadn't been taken off the table.
"I've not ruled that out," he said, but added, "It's not an option we want to consider until we know there is no other option."
Perhaps there is hope that a Pelosi-led Congress won't destroy our country after all---
BWAHAHA!
OK, that was a bit much to pull off...
Empty rhetoric.
Or else..or else.. we will have to raise our voices and write them in a stern letter in all caps and font size 16.
Hoyer said the Democrats' position, like that of the Bush administration, was that preventing a nuclear-armed Iran had to be done through "discussions, negotiations, sanctions."
Brilliant!
I hate typos.. Ignore the "in".
Yeah, this is on the same order as Bill Clinton saying that he wouldn't rest until the embassy bombers/Cole bombers were brought to justice.
Iran better watch out or the democrats will run to the UN again.
Looks like the rhetoric returns and the action retreats. Typical dems.
The Democrats say a nuclear Iran is unacceptable. But they thought a nuclear Iraq was acceptable. Saddam was well on his way.
Well then, that is the end of it.
Nuclear Iran is unacceptable.
What is next on the agenda?
They are already claiming that the electronic voting machines they insisted on after Florida are a republican plot to steal elections.
Headlines today talked about the 2007 economic 'bounce back' when the pre-2007 economy is in almost heroic shape already.
When 2008 rolls around they will be able to claim the high ground, whatever it turns out to be, as their very own.
And, (I predict) they will have a 'legitimate' black man on their ticket (for VP) just in case the Pub's try to run an 'oreo' (possibly female) conservative on theirs.
Maybe I'll feel hopeful later, but so far; nope.
Didn't they adopt the same kind of tone when they passed the Iraq Liberation Act in 1998? The Democrat policy is to talk tough, then pull the rug out from under the US and the troops when action is taken.
Spoken by the party without testicles.
We're fierce!
We're frightening!
We're Democrats?
OK, Steny, you get to break the news to Peace Mom. ;)
"unacceptable" ? Sounds like Steny Hoyer has hired Chirac"s speechwriter.
"Stop or we'll negotiate!"
All the dems wanted was power. Now they got it.
I think I preferr Israel's approach.
"The Maryland Democrat said the view is shared by his party, rejecting assertions that the Democrats would be weaker than the Republicans on Iran."
PROVE IT. Talk is cheap.
He settled for a campaign contribution instead.
And a STERNLY worded letter will follow.
Hey Steny, I got news for you...that's not your call.
I'd like to see what he'd say about that to al-Jazeera.
Yeah, the all-mighty strongly worded letter will keep us safe.
The Dems are against preemptive strikes because they want the enemy to attack us first. I can't figure out if they see some sort of value in being a victim, of if they hate America, or both. (Well, actually I can, the answer is all of the above.)
Oh, good. Then the Dem Congress won't mind when somebody else does something about the nuclear Iran or the nuclear N Kor.
Their real message: "Democrats: Nuclear Nuking Iran unacceptable.
And without a brain or a clue about anything except grabbing power for themselves.
DemocRATS have cojones?
Don't think so. 'Pod.
Selected to this high profile position to be credible to do some splaining to Lucy and Desi Mohammed back in Michigan when stuff goes down in the land of Mordor? Hoyer that is.
The Democrats may - and it's a big may - accept Israel defending itself. If so, that's a step forward. They've wanted to lose or believe we were losing every war since Vietnam to include the Cold War. They also did their best to stop Lincoln too, so they've a long history of being defeatists.

I equate the democrats to the Elephant in Rabbit Fire, a great Bugs Bunny Cartoon. Look what the elephant says in line 76 for the democratic threat, brings back memories.
You're right. All the dems know how to do is play politics, talk a lot and put the squeeze on wealthy people and big corporations.
yup... just kicking the can down the street ( they hope ) for the next congress to deal with .. that is ? if it's not to late by then.
6 o 7 years ago these same Dems were saying that a nuclear Iraq was unacceptable.
Well, come 2012 they can pull out the same speeches demanding that Prsident Romney pull out of Iran.
The surrendering begins right after the posturing ends.
Lol. I dont recall the episode, but would be even more classic if it was a donkey.
