Three men detained at Port of Miami after giving suspicious statements

By Vanessa Blum
South Florida Sun-Sentinel
Posted January 7 2007, 4:22 PM EST MIAMI --

Three men were detained Sunday after trying to gain access to the Port of Miami, according to a spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The driver drew suspicion at the port's delivery entrance around 8 a.m. after making inconsistent statements, said Judy Orihuela. The driver could not produce the requested paperwork to identify himself and his cargo. The vehicle was subsequently searched and two additional men were found in the truck's cab, Orihuela said.

According to Miami-Dade Police detective Robert Williams, the men were trying to conceal themselves. The three detainees, all of Middle Eastern descent, were in the country legally and none appear to be on any terrorist watch lists, Oriheula said.

There was no immediate threat to the port, but its cargo area was closed while authorities used an X-ray machine to search the truck, Orihuela said. The Miami-Dade Bomb Squad is checking the vehicle the men were in. "We want to make sure that trailer was not carrying anything hazardous," Williams said.

The Port of Miami is among the nation's busiest. More than 3.6 million cruise ship passengers traveled through the port in 2005, and its seaport services more than 30 ocean carriers, which delivered more than 1 million cargo containers there in 2005. The men are currently being questioned by the FBI.

That is enough for me!
All the more reason to deports their donkeys ASAP.

Obviously, they lied to obtain residency...

As for being on a watch list, shouldn't this apply immediately?

Is there a translation issue (after all, it is Miami) or were the jihadists actually hiding in the cab? Or more poor writing?

Seriously now, is there a question about why three Arab men (two of whom were brothers) would take the opportunity to run their truck from Michigan to Miami Beach in early January?

All the rest of the story is apparantly a result of miscommunication among various people working for the port authority ~ many of whom probably should be deported back to Salerno, Port au' Prince, Vera Cruz and so forth.

Either that, or it was a dry run to see how much resistance they'll get trying to sneak a truck load of explosives into a busy port. And remember, the authorities ALWAYS play down these incidents, especially if they might spook the all-important tourists. Originally, they said the shoe bomber was just a harmless nut, then they said his shoe bomb would cause no damage, and then, when they were starting to look really foolish, they fessed up that the guy was dangerous and prosecuted him.

Plus the fact that the driver was 20 years old. What company would hire someone that young with that little experience ( just the insurance costs alone ) to drive a load that large, that far. Also, one of the "passengers" had no ID. If someone was planning on taking a trip that long, would they travel without any ID ?

Whether or not the guy had an ID, we also have reports that they were all legal residents, so presumably they all had some sort of "papers".

And which one is the driver? Didn't they have a guy 28?

I heard on the radio this afternoon that their were 2 55 gallon containers, but they were empty.

I wonder if the 2 guys hiding were supposed to get into those drums?

Has anyone else heard about these containers?

The containers disappeared from the story very early on. I suspect they existed, but now all the news sources are saying it was just an error (they "misspoke"). In other words, move along.

I had two thoughts: they were going to hide in the drums - or the driver had brought other people along because somebody else there was going to fill the drums with something that would have been too heavy for one person to lift.

Appreciated--so what's the cab? The place where the products being shipped go? If so, that is an obvious place to hide, unless they had hidden compartments or something.

Your tag line caught my attention. Neither is Times, CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, USA Today, Washington Post, etc. You get the message. A cab is the front part of an 18 wheeler which contains the driver, passengers and engine.

I believe the term "cab" in long distance trucks refers to the seating compartment behind the driver. A place where a back-up can sleep while another is driving the truck.

I understand some cabs are quite deluxe.

Then again, I could be wrong;)

Thanks, I was gone this afternoon and missed the live thread, but the radio news, (ABC and CBS), reported it (55 gal drums), for hours and hours.

I wonder how those containers got into the story in the first place, that is certainly a strange thing to just "make up", and plaster all over the news.

Weird.

No, you're right, that's the cab. Some of them even have showers! However, looking at this truck, I'd say it may have had a sleeping compartment or loft, but not much more. The truck looked a little old and beat up.

There has been some discussion here today about the company that owned the truck, which apparently is a reputable company (although it is not clear that these men worked for it). I was in an accident once where a truck bearing the name of a well-known firm, driven by a drunk, almost killed me. It turned out he did not work for them, and had bought the truck but never painted out the name, as he was theoretically required to do.

I think the drums are like the "Middle Eastern man" who was being sought for several hours after the OKC bombing and then suddenly disappeared from the reports and has never returned, even though Timothy McVeigh failed polygraph tests asking him if there were other people involved.

In this case, however, I think it's probably because there's a need for further investigation and they also don't want to panic people at the Port of Miami (big cruise gateway).

Actually, having friends and family in LE, I can tell you you're seeing a "move along" operation. Something happened, but we don't want the gawkers showing up. They'll get info from them and then release them. These were small fry.

I realize Muslims can never do anything wrong from your point of view, but these guys were obviously up to something. Of course, I also realize that lying to the infidel is also part of the cult.

When I was in trucking, they would hire drivers below 23 years old, due to insurance costs. Some places were 25 years old.

No real trucking firm would hire a 20 year old unless it was a relative.

Yes these "incidents" are always down played, like the American Airline "crash" in Feb. 2002 in the NYC suburbs where some 270 people were killed. The official account was mechanical failure, but there are enough accounts of an explosion on board indicating the original Shoe-Bomber was successful.

I think these guys were trying to bring something in. Whatever it was, it would have fit in the drums but it would have been too heavy for one guy to carry or handle. I bet that's why we're hearing nothing. If they were going to bring it in, they had to get it from somebody, somewhere. I saw in an earlier post that even the cruise ships have been held up and are being searched.

I heard that too, and then the next news cycle they didn't talk about the containers. I was thinking perhaps they had some kind of innocent cargo to get into the port, so they could pick up something extremely nasty that had been smuggled in to take back with them. I smell a rat some place, especially since they also said the driver didn't have any form of indentification.

Why can't Moslems do anything wrong from my point of view?

I've suggested most of Iraq's problems can be solved by withdrawal of all the Sunni to nearby countries they moved from (Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon) ~ their days as tax-collectors for the Turks are long passed.

Plus, the biggest one, I've noted that the Twelvers are totally wrong about the Twelfth Imam.

Let me put you in the Reyes camp ~ all same thing.

"Cab" is short for cabin; ie passenger cabin. In the case of an 18 wheeler, it involves the seating compartment and the sleeper. The larger sleepers are known in the trucking world as "condo's" Some of them are more luxurious than many homes. Heck, some of them ARE homes.

If the pictures I saw are the truck involved, there is plenty of room to hide stowaways.

Even if he owned the truck he has to have a Commercial Driver's License to drive it.

I am not a trucker but, I believe a CDL is required for anything over 26,000 lbs gross weight.

Actually, most of the people who are attacking us appear to be Shiites, even though we have tried as much as possible to court them and get them on our side (since in theory they hated the Sunni Saddam and he hated them).

But my feeling is that the US should not get involved in Islamic politics. We can't solve their problems, and in addition their conflicts are way too complicated for an outsider to come in and solve. Muslims don't get along with each other and they don't get along with any other religion or philosophy or non-Muslim culture in the world, unless they are such a tiny percentage of the population they are probably apolitical and really do just want to survive and get along. They've got to deal with this; we can't.

Ok, the empty drum thing is the likely key.

So we have 2 scenarios.
1. They were going to pick something up from an incoming ship.
2. They were going to blow something up like an incoming ship.

Will we ever know the facts?
