Every now and again, I like to recall the closing passage of the only presidential Inaugural Address in my lifetime to ever move and stay with me. With the Dims now in charge of Congress, and with Pelosi already "hinting" (as though it's unexpected; unplanned) that they will pull the financial rug out from under our war effort and our troops, these words will help reinforce me as we go forward into what is likely to be a very ugly new political year:

When this spirit of citizenship is missing, no government program can replace it. When this spirit is present, no wrong can stand against it.

After the Declaration of Independence was signed, Virginia statesman John Page wrote to Thomas Jefferson: ``We know the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong. Do you not think an angel rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm?''

Much time has passed since Jefferson arrived for his inauguration. The years and changes accumulate. But the themes of this day he would know: our nation's grand story of courage and its simple dream of dignity.

We are not this story's author, who fills time and eternity with his purpose. Yet his purpose is achieved in our duty, and our duty is fulfilled in service to one another.

Never tiring, never yielding, never finishing, we renew that purpose today, to make our country more just and generous, to affirm the dignity of our lives and every life.

This work continues. This story goes on. And an angel still rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm.
President George W. Bush, January 20, 2001

PHOTO OF THE DAY: With absolutely no new photos available of the first couple, I thought you might enjoy a retrospective of last year's State of the Union Address:

President George W. Bush smiles as he's applauded during the 2006 State of the Union Address.

Sergeant at Arms Bill Livingood announces President George W. Bush's arrival at the House Chamber.

Members of Congress and other attendees get to their feet as the President arrives at the podium.

The First Lady and her invited gurests applaud the family of Staff Sgt. Dan Clay as they were acknowledged by President Bush. Family members of Sgt. Clay, who was killed in Iraq, are his father, Clarence; mother, Sara Jo; and wife, Lisa.

President Bush was congratulated by Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford and Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu as he left the U.S. House Chamber.

The President waved to someone in the balcony as he was leaving the Chamber.

And now for a little fun before the heavy-duty stuff that will start to come down next week.

On Nov. 25, 2006, Barney and Beezie enjoyed the late fall sun in the White House gardens.

Here's a great close-up of Barney taken last August.

One of our favorite photos of Barney from last summer. Barney looks a bit skeptically at a "Flat Stanley" cut-out placed next to him on the South Lawn, July 20, 2006.
