Throughout the Berger affair, we were repeatedly assured that former National Security Advisor Sanyd Berger could not have destroyed any documents that the government did not have copies of. He could not, as a result, have been part of a cover-up of Clinton's disastrous fecklessness towards al Qaeda. It was this assurance that led many to view the episode as criminal buffoonery, rather than serious felonious conduct.
The release of the Berger Report by the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform changes that understanding, and makes the decision by the Department of Justice to give Berger the slightest of wrist taps inexplicable.

My local craptastic "news" paper recently had a lengthy editorial taking Laura Bush to task for not "speaking out" about her mole removal, strongly implying she purposely hid her mole from the public in what could only be a Rove/Cheney plot to inflict small, cancerous moles on unsuspecting Americans. But not a word from their esteemed editorial department about this criminal Berger affair.
Am I the crazy one here?

the Burgler got a slap on the wrist....It seems there "is" no controllin legal authority where the left is concerned...
the Pubes wont hold the lefts feet to the fire, so whats the point?
Yes and you need to increase your meds dosage now! :-)

DONE!
I'm feeling much better already :))

Not 'inexplicable' at all. It's simply that the ruling class WILL have its way.
Let's see. If I hold-up a Walmart and just steal a couple thousand dollars, that is not serious because Walmart has plenty of copies of those dollar bills. If I kill a few babies, not serious because there are plenty more.
If, due to my prior employment, I am granted the professional courtesy to have access to sensitive information of my previous employment, abusing that professional courtesy is not serious because.....?
Because he has a '(D)' behind his name. The unbias media in the name of being fair and balance can only report about scandals if there is an '(R)' behind the name. Probably the only network that would bother mentioning this story is that evil Fox News who has the nerve to tarnish the name of good and honest democrats working to save the earth from republican slime.
That is great, I increased mine too because your post indicated that to me also.
As a matter of fact everyone should do the same today!
If Hugh had followed the story when it started he'd know that it was reported then that a number of the documents present were originals with no copies. That there was no way to know exactly what he took and that in all likelihood they were the only copy - and the Berger knew that.
Nope. Not crazy. It's you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours time in DC. If you or I had done what the "Burglar" had done we'd be in the Federal pen right now.

Whitey: "Don't waste your breath. Irrespective of who runs the White House,
at the DOJ, ALL Democrats are ALL above the law, suckers."
If Berger was innocent, he would agree to a lie detector test and also a truth serum, to prove it. If I had nothing to hide, I would demand it to prove my good character. But, we all know that people with good character associated with the Clinton's are 6 feet under. I guess Berger made the decision to live, than be patriotic and have good character.

As part of his punishment, Sandy will have all National Security restrictions lifted in time to serve the next Donk President, if there is one
Never. You are witnessing the power of propaganda, and the selective prosecution (minimal punishment) for an anti-truth, anti-freedom internal enemy.
Not inexplicable at all.
Sandy Berger is a Person Who Matters (PWM). PWMs are not bound by the same rules as you and me. PWMs can only be taken to task by other PWMs, and PWMs never turn on their own, unless they have no choice at all.
The status of PWM is more important than ideology or party. Sandy Berger goes to the right Washington parties, lives in the right Washington neighborhood and sends his kids to the right Washington schools. The other PWMs aren't going to let him get into any serious trouble.

Is this a surprise to many of us? There is usually only one reason to steal and shred classified documents, and it isn't a legitimate reason.
900 raw FBI files. A through H, wasn't it?
Just like Alger Hiss.
This entire episode reeks of insider coverup and obstruction of justice.
If I understand this correctly:
1. The secret documents were originals.
2. The secret documents had handwritten notes (comments) in the margins by Clinton/Berger/Clark.
3. These documents went to the heart of Clinton's handling/mishandling of Osama bin Laden.
4. These documents were "vetted" by Berger, i.e. some were stolen and/or altered, BEFORE the 9/11 Commission was able to review them.
Conclusion?
A. Sandy Berger criminally obstructed the 9/11 Commission. He should have served hard jail time.
B. The "slap-on-the-wrist" that he received is appalling. He INTENTIONALLY tried to hide and obstruct crucial information on the cause of the deaths of 3,000 Americans. What was the Justice Department doing giving him such leniency?
C. Between the presence of Jamie Gorelick on the commission and the actions of Sandy Berger, the 9/11 Commission report is not worth the paper it is written on.

Secretary of Defense Cohen, Impeached Bill Clinton, Albright, and too-long-accepted CODE-level thief
and DOJ-and GOP-accepted-document-destroyer National Security Adviser Sandy Berger,
holding "court" in the Ronald Reagan Building on April 25, 1999.
The Impeached Bill Clinton: "We were all making comments
we shouldn't have about how the meeting was getting very boring.
So finally we decided we had to make like the monkey. Cohen
started this 'hear no evil,' and then I was next so I spoke no evil,
then Madeleine saw no evil, so Sandy Berger said, 'I'm evil.'"
Indeed. Just like Alger Hiss.
Nixon is still villified by the PWMs over that one.
The Clintons have EVERYONE's FBI files!! Not just A-H.
For any doubting freepers, that is a REAL UNADULTERATED PICTURE!! It's hard to believe that such a great country was run by Immature Idiots who took nothing serious other than destroying Republicans.
Anything dealing in a negative way for a clinton is never dealt with in the drive by media.
How is the Monica affair reconciled with that? Easy, extramarital sex, or getting away with shady land deals, or any other crime when slickness helps one get away with it and where a dem is the perp is considered a resume enhancer........
In the spirit of his so-called "New Tone", Bush left all the Clinton appointees and careerists in the Justice, State, CIA, Defense, and other vital departments. This explains why Berger gets a slap on the wrist (and, worse, restoration of his clearance in a few years) for treason, while Libby is on trial for his freedom over no crime whatsoever (other than maybe an imperfect memory, if that's a crime). It also explains why there has been a blizzard of security leaks to the Drive-By Media. Bush's "New Tone" has to be the dumbest strategy by any president in the history of our nation.

Lee Hamilton (co-chair) of the 911 Commission is on the Board of Directors of Sandy Berger's company - Stonebridge International.
I can not believe that no Freeper can locate Craig Livingstone to tell us what he's doing.

Shoulda got a snap of the neck, Saddam style.....
I firmly believe the Pubbies aren't pursuing this because they know their own skeletons might be exposed. Just more evidence how interchangeable the two parties really are....
EXCERPT Sticky-fingered Clinton aide Sandy Berger got off a lot easier than Martha Stewart no jail time and no aggravating ankle bracelet because he only lied to the press about purloining top-secret documents. "He may have lied to the press when he suggested he did it by mistake, but lying to the press isn't a federal crime. If he had lied to us, we would have prosecuted," said prosecutor Noel Hillman, who heads the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section.
Berger copped a misdemeanor plea and got off with a $10,000 fine after admitting he sneaked out of the National Archives five top-secret memos hidden in his clothes, ostensibly to review them in his office. He also admitted using a scissors to cut three of them into little pieces to destroy them his excuse appears to be that he was afraid of getting caught if he tried to sneak them back into the National Archives. "It's reasonable to conclude that disposal was a better alternative than sneaking them back," Hillman said as he provided new details on questions still swirling around Berger's deal.
He said the originals had been scanned into an Archives' computer and Berger only got copies printed from it. Asked if he's sure Berger didn't take originals, too, he said there's no evidence of that.
Meanwhile, the probe seems to have shifted to whether Clinton appointees at the Archives tried to cover for Berger. Archives chief John Carlin, a Clinton appointee, was bounced soon after the incident.
It's a violation of law to take classified documents, so Archives staffers should have called the FBI when they saw Berger do it instead, they called Clinton's Mr. Fix-it, lawyer Bruce Lindsey.
The memos were multiple drafts on the millennium terror plot that concluded the Clinton administration escaped a terror attack by sheer luck and identified "glaring weaknesses" in Clinton-era security. Berger was at the Archives to vet documents for the 9/11 commission. Some early drafts of the still-classified memo are said to be much more scathing in rapping Team Clinton than the final version.

Gutless.
There are two sets of rules which applies to Big Media. One is for Dems and the other is for Republicans. Simply stated news that embarrasses Dems (no matter how important to national security) will either be given short shrift or swept under the rug entirely. The latter is being done with Burglar's actions. Of course if Burglar were a Republican, this story would have been headline news on all the major lib rags, and we'd had daily discourses about evil Republicans hiding and destroying state secrets by the likes of Matthews, Olbermann, and the rest of the lib gang of crazy babblers and assorted idiots.
Republicans always cover up for Democrats as assiduously and more skillfully than the Democrats cover up for themselves. It is part of being "compassionate," I suppose.

The 9/11 Soviet style commission appears to have its origins from that day forward. The archives at the time of the Burglar purging still were under the charge of a Clinton appointee.
Further the 9/11 Commission got government establishment/sanction/funding and even an extension, by following the liberal method otherwise know as "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon," says the fifth rule of Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals, Saul Alinsky's classic 1971 activist handbook. (http://www.spectator.org/dsp_article.asp?art_id=10527)
President George Bush was ridiculed into making the liberal commission have credibility. The ridicule was smearing the President that he ignored from day one the liberal warnings of terrorists threats.
Sadly there was NO Republican in Congress with any memory of Clintonism and its methodology to hold any substantiative hearings, and ONLY one former Senator then US Attorney General Ashcroft, that pulled the liberal veil open far enough for we the funders of liberals methodology to see the very individuals that built a celled government were now the investigative arm to ridicule a President out of office and cover up, purge, and cleanse the previous ones who apparently knew the what and when of things.
I don't recall reading that way back then, Suzy. Do you remember where you read that? A source?
Not that I doubt you, but I'd like to have the ammunition that a reliable source would provide.
Thanks.
Who is the President? Whose Justice Dept. is it? For once there is something that can reasonably be termed Bush's fault, and nobody is talking about it.
Berger is where George W. Bush wants him. Out running around and soon to be restored to his former security clearance level. I voted for GWB twice. Not sorry, not by a long shot, but not for this sort of outcome did I vote.
Of course the MSM turned its usual blind eye to this sort of thing.
No link, just memory, and it was not just Republicans.
You are not crazy. You are perfectly sane. This is a coverup of massive proportions. If this happened, to lets say, Condi Rice, then it would have 3 stories a day on the cover of the NY Slimes.
Almost certainly what Berger destroyed was drafts and hand-written marginal notes that went into the completed and sanitized final document.
Some of those hand written notes clearly gave away too much, probably that Berger and clinton knew about the bin Ladin threat but for political reasons preferred to ignore it.
Almost certainly the National Archives did NOT have any duplicate records or copies of these hand written notes or drafts. So, critical material was successfully destroyed and clinton's guilt in DELIBERATELY doing nothing about the Muslim terrorist threat is concealed.
Clinton is certainly guilty. Berger is certainly guilty. Further, the people at the National Archives are guilty, first for failing to do their job and then for failing to clamp down on Berger when they were told he was stealing classified documents. They continued to provide him with unique and irreplaceable documents to steal. And when it could no longer be hidden, THEY CALLED CLINTON's LAWYERS instead of the FBI to report the matter.
So, there was treason and dereliction in the National Archives that was never investigated or punished. And the President is ultimately responsible for that, for failing to put trustworthy people in charge there who would change the culture he inherited from carter and clinton.
Finally, of course, Gonzalez cooperated in covering the whole thing up. Again, it is inescapable that Bush is ultimately responsible. This was a very high profile case, with grave political as well as criminal implications. It's inconceivable that the President wasn't aware of it, and that he let--or encouraged--Gonzalez to cover it up. Just as he covered up so many other clinton crimes, from the first day in office when he covered up the business of vandalizing White House computers.
Bush has a record of appointing some first-rate advisers at the senior level. But he also has a dismal record of letting the criminal leftist culture in the bureaucracy thrive, with scarcely any effort to fix it.
And how can one forget the MSM outrage when Dick Cheney's aides reported his hunting accident to the local paper instead of the media overlords?
