Neon sign tallies war dead at Lafayette memorial

LAFAYETTE - The display of crosses across from the Lafayette BART station is now more visible at night.

Organizers added a neon sign with the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq. The new electric-powered neon sign sits on the lower portion of the large white sign that carries a running count of fallen troops in black numbers.

There has been some discussion over whether the neon sign is "tacky" and fits the memorial, said organizer Jeff Heaton. But organizers decided to install it in light of President Bush's stated intention to send more troops to Iraq.

Heaton said he will be gauging community response to the neon sign over the next few days.

The display, which has drawn both applause and anger, has grown substantially since it went up over Veteran's Day weekend. There are now 1,205 crosses, and creators plan to add 200 more every Sunday until there is one for each of the more than 3,000 dead soldiers.

New Orleans 2007 murder tally would be more telling.

Will a well-placed rock be considered a "no" vote?

Depends on the size of the rock. Think trebuchet!

Actually, I would imagine he would simply ignore the "no" votes. The Mayor of Lafayette is a partner at my law office. I've been kidding him that he's been getting more air time than Dick Turban lately.
