Bradford to get £5m for tackling Islamophobia
LONDON: Britain’s city of Bradford is set to be named as one of the areas that will benefit from cash to “tackle Islamophobia and win the hearts and minds of young Muslims”.
Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly and Community Cohesion Minister Phil Woolas want councils to collaborate with Muslims in winning the battle, and a £5 million government scheme is likely to be announced this month after discussions with local authorities on how they can respond to the threat posed by violent extremists.
It is not yet known how many councils will benefit, but Woolas told the daily Telegraph and Argus that it was “more than likely Bradford would gain”.
“I am emphasising there is no reason, nor do I have evidence that there are extremists in the area ... but there was no evidence in Leeds before the July 7 bombings. We want to win the hearts and minds of young Muslims. In Bradford, we are asking councils and all community organisations of all faiths to help make this happen. We want to deter people who might be attracted to Osama Bin Laden’s evil message,” he said, adding that councils and police would also be asked to work together.
This step comes as part of the government’s plans to prevent a repeat of the bombings that shook London and killed 52 commuters.
Rashid Awan, president of the Pakistan Society of West Yorkshire, said cash could unite communities. “It is great news. Constructive projects will contribute towards eliminating extremism, and this needs to be done in a systematic manner. The money could help educate young people, so they are seen to be cared for, a part of the community and a part of Bradford. Bringing them together will be an important move,” he said.
A spokesman for the Department of Communities and Local Government said the announcement was part of a programme in progress to tackle extremism. ppi
