Passing Exchange Becomes Political Flashpoint
The New York Times ^ | 1/13/2006 | HELENE COOPER and THOM SHANKER

A passing exchange during a Senate hearing on Thursday turned into a political flashpoint overnight as Senator Barbara Boxer, the California Democrat, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice accused one another of insensitivity in comments about motherhood and the war in Iraq.

In an interview with The New York Times on Friday, Ms. Rice suggested that Ms. Boxer had set back feminism by suggesting during the hearing that the childless Ms. Rice had paid no price in the Iraq war.

“I thought it was O.K. to be single,” Ms. Rice said. “I thought it was O.K. to not have children, and I thought you could still make good decisions on behalf of the country if you were single and didn’t have children.”

(snip)

In an interview on Friday, Senator Boxer said her comments had been misunderstood and were now being turned against her by the White House and by Republicans. “What I was trying to do in this exchange was to find common ground with Condi Rice,” she said. “My whole point was to focus on the military families who pay the price.”

Senator Boxer added: “I’m saying, she’s like me, we do not have families who are in the military. What they are doing is a really tortured way to attack a United States senator who voted against the war.”

No good, Babs, we all heard your remarks. You cannot put enough lipstick on that pig to turn it into a thing of beauty. The botched joke defense has been tried and it failed. Telling us we're too stupid to understand your nuance is also a non-starter.

It's sort of turning out that all professional women are all victims all the time.

Boxer may as well have said that, because Rice is black, she shouldn't be the Secretary of State of a nation comprised of 85% white people.

And notice that the NYT does NOT give the Boxer quote so we can all judge whether the remarks were subject to misunderstanding or if they were as crude and hateful as they sounded plopping from Boxer's lips. More cover from the MSM for their patrons.

Just another liberal coward who will not stand up and say:

"Yes, I said that and I meant it".

Senator Boxer saying that she is like Secretary Rice shows just how far out of touch she really is.

Barbara Boxer and 'common ground' with a Republican????

I've seen it all now.

OK, I see the quote is split by more explanation and the sequence does not quite follow the original NYP story. The full speech without interruprions has a much greater impact. Never the less, if that is how Boxer finds common ground, I'd hate to hear her trying to find separate ground.

Passing exchange, huh? It was a thoroughly planned partisan attack, over the top even by Boxer standards. She finally got some flak back, and suddenly she's a victim.

Typical.

Being a liberal means you never own your own behavior.

I saw the whole thing. It was at the end of an emotional harangue a desperate housewife would be proud of.

I notice that all the Senator's apologists on TV want to move the discussion away from the insult and onto the "bigger point," being, that someone who has children in Iraq is likely to veiw the war there differently (implied, more correctly) than someone who does not. I wonder if these people ever stopped to consider that those who do not have children in Iraq are more likely to make a logical judgment about it. That's the reason why we don't allow the victim's family members serve on a jury.

Now she's getting serious with the insults.

Well Senator, if you cannot express yourself clearly, perhaps you should find another line of work.

A passing exchange!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was a well thought out attack on Dr. Rice.

The left fears her. They want to be sure she is never going to be a threat to her heinous.

They set out to destroy Dan Quayle, Dick Cheney, and now Dr. Rice.

They want no competition.

Common ground??????????????????

These two women have led polar opposite lives.

Dr. Rice, the great achiever, learned, articulate, and a contributing member of society.

What has Ms. Boxer ever done, other than make a jackass of herself every time she opens her vicious mouth.
