Clinton Doubts Iraqis Can Pacify Baghdad
ABCNews ^ | 1/14/07

Posted on 01/14/2007 12:08:11 AM PST by XR7

BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton expressed doubt Saturday that Iraq's government would follow through with its promises to secure Baghdad as she met with top Iraqi officials and American commanders.

It was the third trip to Iraq for Clinton, a Democrat from New York who is considering running for president, and comes amid opposition from the Democratic-controlled Congress to President Bush's plans to send in 21,500 more troops to stop the rampant violence.

"I don't know that the American people or the Congress at this point believe this mission can work," she told ABC News in Baghdad. "And in the absence of a commitment that is backed up by actions from the Iraqi government, why should we believe it?"

Noting she had to travel wearing body armor and surrounded by soldiers and security guards, Clinton called the situation in Iraq "heartbreaking."

"This is my third trip here. I've seen the violence and security problems increase, not decrease," she said, calling on Bush to start withdrawing U.S. troops.

"That would really demonstrate to the Iraqis that we don't have an open-ended commitment," she said. "We are not going to be here providing protection for their leaders, which we do. We are not going to be here standing by and trying to be called in from time to time as they see fit. That is not in the cards."

Clinton, who was making a one-day visit to the country, spoke to ABC exclusively after meeting with the two top military commanders in Iraq, U.S. Gen. George Casey and Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno, according to the network.

She was traveling with U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Indiana, who opted out of the 2008 race, and Rep. John McHugh, a Republican from upstate New York. They also planned to travel to Afghanistan.

The three, all members of armed services committees, also met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

"I'm skeptical that the Iraqi government will do what they have promised to do, and that I think is the concern of all of us who have heard this before," she said, referring to earlier security efforts that have failed to stop the sectarian attacks that have been increasing since the Feb. 22 bombing of a Shiite shrine in Samarra.

Clinton, who opposes Bush's plans to send more U.S. troops to Iraq, last traveled to Iraq in February 2005 with Sen. John McCain, a Republican presidential contender.

Clinton had planned to meet with the Army's 10th Mountain Division which is based in New York and deployed in both Iraq and Afghanistan at their base in Baghdad but the visit was canceled due to bad weather, the U.S. military said.

She didn't meet with any of the troops?

I think she went to Iraq already knowing that she wanted to say it was a bad, "heartbreaking" situation over there.

Can't stand her.

Well, gosh, Hillary, maybe you should have gone without the body armor and the convoy protection. I mean, it is such a nuisance and all. Perhaps you should have just gone footoose and fancy-free and maybe gone to some to those really cool shops on Haifa Street.

The result of that wouldn't be "heartbreaking."

Not to most of us, anyway.

The reason, I know is, because the troops can handle the situation. It's the Iraqi Gov't that is the weak link.

Well, thus far Democrats haven't even been able to pacify Washington DC, New York City, Atlanta, Los Angeles, St. Louis, East St. Louis, New Orleans, ...

Hey, Hill...I'm going into my fourth year in Iraq.

Funny....I see a whole different picture from what you do. A much more positive one, by the way.

Go away, Hillary. Wash your hair. Buy a new pantsuit or something.

Just go away.

If 'her husband' had done his job, instead of playing with an intern, maybe we wouldn't be fighting this war in the first place.

I don't really care what Hillary Rodham Clinton thinks about anything especially the Iraq war. She and 'her husband' need to be in prison not giving us their opinion about anything and everything.

She really needs to be paying more attention to 'her family' than trying to tell the rest of us how to live our lives. I despise the woman.

Allegra, a friend of mine was in Iraq for a few months on business over a year - maybe closer to 2 ago. I don't remember where he was, but he seemed to think that about 2/3 of the country was peaceful enough to go out to dinner, walk to work, etc.

How would you characterize things there now? (I know that's a big question, but I'd be happy with a short answer)

The ONLY reports we get are the hot spots, I'm just wondering if it's general widespread open season on anyone American or the wrong flavor muzzie, or if most of the conflict is centered in one or a few concentrated areas.

It could work that way. The "surge" is our last shot at this. If the Shiites don't cooperate Iraq will be left to its Civil War.

But while we are at it: Clinton ,like so many others, is deliberately exagerating the IRAQ thing into some miniscule little "police action" of a few insurgents in Bahgdad...just like the lefties in the MSM are doing.

Bush is actually widening the view of the gameboard at this juncture to expose all the so-called "non-involved" other countries who have been actively fueling, funding and conducting this world-wide war of terrorism.

The net result is going to make the triumphant Democratidiots look utterly foolish as '08 approaches and lead inevitably to the triumphant return of the keen minded Republican Party to run things from then on.

(Come to think of it,I sound pretty nuts too. Whatever you've got,I'm catching it.)

She's been put on a foreign relations committee and makes these trips to try to put in the mind of the American people she is ready to be CIC. She's nowhere near being a Condi or Thatcher. Her image is a welcome thing for the terrorists. Even they are laughing that she has been given this status by the media and the idiots of NY.
