I am sure he realises this but it is also realistic enough to know that wars do not work to our timetable especially those that have been raging for 1000 plus years as Islam v Christianity has.

Great point, kabar...
There hasn't been enough talk by the so-called media that they KNOW this is a very long term war...and it is unrealistic to even talk about how Bush has to WIN before he leaves.
If Americans listened to what Pres. Bush says, instead of waiting for the MSM to interpret his speeches...there would be a lot more patience and tolerance.
But, just as I type that...it also has to be taken into consideration that we really don't KNOW what America thinks.
Polls are rigged...and rigged FOR the left.

Absolutely the President warned we were in for the long haul and we are - long haul means years probably long past our lifetime and beyond and may never end really because of the fundamental differences.

My guess is that if we play the abortion or the gun card instead of the war, border, economy and other issues, it might not get us where we want to be--on the winning side.
I still say to win the next election we have to bring in voters from the squishy middle--independents,not a pleasant thought but it is reality.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR FIRST PLACE FROM LAST WEEK.
I am hoping that my yelling will bring you here.
I hope that the fact that I am not seeing you post does NOT mean you have lost your power.

"Martha Raditz says the media really understands this war, we know the numbers, we are the experts, and damnit, we can condemn it because we are smarter than the President."
Pure BS.....the media hide in their hotels in Iraq and only scurry out when something blows out...my hubby calls them all cockroatches.

I still say to win the next election we have to bring in voters from the squishy middle--independents,not a pleasant thought but it is reality. This is always the case IMHO and is applicable to Britain as much as the US. This is why the Conservatives in Britain are currently taking the route they are - they want to win next time - I hope and pray they do I cannot face another 8 - 9 years of Labour.

Thanks for that take laverne, I find CNN equally hard to watch,.
I just hear a few minutes of fat tim grilling one of our guys(Hadley) and I have never heard such blatant one sided bias on the part of a commentator before. Fat Tim actually out did himself today.

I lived under the Parliamentary system in Canada for 20 years, and much prefer the American system.
You all can have a vote of no confidence and bring on a new election, but between elections the Parliamentary system gives the 'Government' a dictatorial power, that our Framers of our Constitution decided not to repeat.

I agree with you rodguy911. The winner in 2008 will be the person who gets the vote from independents and non-aligned voters.
Our side needs a solid conservative who can draw from Libertarians as well as those independents who used to be Democrats but left as they got so radical. A Democrat-Lite candidate cannot do that.

I recognize the that War on Terror will continue. It already provides too many funding excuses to be removed from the budget. I was speaking about the military portion of the WOT.
Americans can expect to spend long times in line to get on an airplane; we can expect to see politicians proclaim that they are more patriotic than the other guy; we can expect to see more money be spent on WOT as it degenerates into the same quagmire as the War On Drugs and the War On Poverty.
But, the chances of Hillary or Barack or John M. initiating military action into Iran or (pick your favorite) are very unlikely. My point was, the effective use of the US military to combat terrorism ends on 1/20/2009. After that, it will be diplomacy and spending.

There is NOTHING in Hillary's background or in her squishy, cowardly good-time Charley husband's that qualifies her to make such pronouncements, which are predicated only on her desire for votes for herself.
She does not speak from conviction but only for votes.

Should be first stake in the heart of her campaign...the GOP need to pounce on her for that...we know no Dems will.
#####
Since the words "Dems" and "media coverage" are practically synonymous, it is up to us who care to contact our Republican 'spokesmen' (any congressman or senator who is willing to find a microphone and a camera) and encourage them to speak out - forcefully!

The difference is executive power in the UK is held by the ruling party in parliament. In the US, executive power is an entity unto itself and by design has friction between the legislative branch and executive.

I can't think of much that we could actually say about hillary that could get enough attention to really matter one way or the other.<p.
Problem with her is that almost everything you can say has already been said.
Probably the best way to defeat her is to put up a candidate that gives off such an opposite appearance from her that the difference is so striking it becomes an embarrassment to be hillary for her and her party.
IMHO a Rudy/Condi ticket would do just that.
