Kidnap victim Shawn Hornbeck was "brainwashed" into staying with his abductor after being told his parents no longer wanted him.
His kidnapper also threatened to shoot the 15-year-old after snatching him off the street.
Friends of the teenager have revealed Michael Devlin, 41, had at least three guns in the apartment where Shawn was held captive.
Tony Douglas, 15, who was Shawn's best friend, said: "We both knew there were guns in the house. Michael told us that he had the guns and were for his protection."
Shawn's stepfather Craig Akers, 45, has revealed his son's life was threatened by Devlin while he lived with him in a ground floor flat in Kirkwood, a suburb of St Louis, Missouri.

I cannot believe how many people at other cites (eg alt.true.crime) are saying the most vile things about Hornbeck. It's just like Steven Staynor all over again-according to the movie about his tragic life, he was all but run out of school after his return by macho thugs taunting him over what had been done to him by his captor. :-( I fear the exact same thing will happen to Hornbeck.
He was also told his mother was killed in a car crash.

I fear the same too. Let's face it, he's handsome boy. I'm worried out of jealousy and meanness he will get teased and/or bullied. I wish him the best.
I Agree 100 % , It's SUPER EASY to Judge Shawn when most Freepers at the age of 11 & in the 5th Grade are raped repeatly & who knows what else that sick ##### that bastard did to the poor kid !
Lawdude, obviously this is jut the view we would love to see happen today, that is guy hang for his crimes, but we are aware a trial will happen first.

Knowing from experience what high school is like, I'm not too optimistic. If I were the parents and could afford it I'd try to put him in a private school with stricter discipline to avoid just that.

There are sick, disturbed posters among us. Topics like these weed them out.
Ditto. We taughter our toddler the phone and address of our home and his grandparent's. We also taught him to stand up for himself and conservative principles. Others his age became wastoids. He has a fabulous job and a wonderful family.
I am not blaming the boy. I find it remarkable that in most of these stories we find stepparents, boyfriends, girlfriends, but seldom the mother and father still married to each other.

They also rebel at different ages. It's possible he would have in the time. Who knows?
Look at Shawns's face and his eyes and his behavior and then think about Elizabeth Smart and they're demeanor when both were rescued.
There's something missing. At least that's what I've observed.
They don't looked overjoyed at being rescued, they aren't demonstrative, their smiles look almost phony, like they're still playing a role. And they're embarrassed about what they've been through.
As much as everyone would like to show them as being typical teenagers by their asking for McDonalds and doing other typical teenage things, they aren't typical normal teenagers.
