Petrol will be rationed in Iran from March

January 11, 2007

LONDON, January 11 (IranMania) - Under Fuel Management Bill ratified last week as well as the results of a study on budget bill for the Iranian year beginning March 21, the government has decided to ration petrol, develop public transportation and encourage people to use cars to run on gasoline and gas as of next spring, reported the Persian daily Iran.

The government’s plan is aimed at optimizing fuel consumption and preventing wastage and excessive use of the vital fuel.

The government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had a similar plan to ration gasoline use this year but a parliament approval allowed his administration to import $2.2 bln worth of gasoline instead to meet rising demand.

The parliament then gave tentative approval for spending an extra $2.2 bln on gasoline imports but warned fuel rationing might be necessary sometime later this year.

The lawmakers approved a draft proposal by the Majlis Planning and Budget Commission to spend $2.2 bln until March on gasoline imports, slashing back the $3.5 bln requested by the government that would have obviated the need to ration fuel.

Last February, parliament approved a $2.5 bln budget for petrol imports which ran out by late September due to higher oil prices, rising consumption and the smuggling of mlns of liters of petrol out of the country every month.

Head of Majlis Energy Commission Kamal Daneshyar had earlier said that the country has only three options in dealing with high gasoline consumption. One is to ration it, the other is to sell it at 3,000 rials per liter or at 5,000 rials.

The fuel rationing bill will soon be put to the parliament as a double-urgent bill for final approval to specify the government’s duties on managing fuel consumption and rationing. If ratified, it will also offer a five-year plan to improve public transportation system by extending its services to 75% of the total transportation network. The plan also emphasize on phasing out dilapidated cars within the same period, after which none of them will be allowed to ply on the roads.

Iran has the world's third largest oil reserve, at 132.5 billion barrels (as of 2006).

the price of gasoline is ???,

in Iran.

to fix this, all they would have to do
is charge the world price, which
is about $1.50 per gallon...

of course, there would be rioting

They've got big problems coming up on the gasoline front. Rationing and higher prices will sow lots of discontent. Here's a related article I ran across awhile back:

Iran, an Oil Giant, in a Gasoline Squeeze

Festus Thanks for asking for a Decipher. ...and encourage people to use cars to run on gasoline and gas as of next spring... Can someone translate the above into english ? Instead of your car running on Gasoline alone, they want the cars to run on Gasoline AND Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) - a Duel Fuel car. In which you can run on either fuel as you desire. Most would choose to run on LPG if Gasoline prices are too high. With the tradeoff being, the Conversion costs quite a bit of money and you'd need to drive a fair distance before the cost saving came into effect. With Gasoline in Australia at $1.15 per litre (over $4 per gallon) the govt has introduced a Rebate for converting to LPG. That is, part of the conversion cost will be paid for by the govt - and thus the other citizens. If Iran is encouraging this, it means they have Loads of LPG they haven't found a use for, or can't sell it as much as Gasoline.

but not enough brains running the country too??

Kinda like having a huge gold mine on your property and not harvesting the resource because one is too busy worrying about what his neighbors are always doing, spending loads of time in front of the TV camera bragging about your gold mine and all the gold and constantly attending meetings to discuss unrelated topics as how to intimidate your neighbors.

They're supposedly in process of building refineries, but they take a while.
The regime doesn't care about infrastructure. They don't want to waste billions of dollars when they can spend that money on bigger projects.
They don't care about the people, so they don't make providing gasoline a priority. If the people have to go thru some hardships while the refineries are being built, so be it.

There have been some posts here recently, locations of which I don't remember, of articles that described the international financial battle our government is waging against the Iranians. The centerpiece of the fight is to prevent them from getting financing to improve, and even maintain, their refineries. It looks like those policies may be starting to draw blood.

Simple: As of next spring Iranians must use cars than run on either gasoline or gas.

They still are, #4 in the world. They just are not keeping up with their refining needs. Their oil is sent elsewhere and gasoline is imported.
