51% of Women Are Now Living Without Spouse
New York Times ^ | 16 January 2007 | Sam Roberts

For what experts say is probably the first time, more American women are living without a husband than with one, according to a New York Times analysis of census results.

In 2005, 51 percent of women said they were living without a spouse, up from 35 percent in 1950 and 49 percent in 2000.

Coupled with the fact that in 2005 married couples became a minority of all American households for the first time, the trend could ultimately shape social and workplace policies, including the ways government and employers distribute benefits.

Several factors are driving the statistical shift. At one end of the age spectrum, women are marrying later or living with unmarried partners more often and for longer periods. At the other end, women are living longer as widows and, after a divorce, are more likely than men to delay remarriage, sometimes delighting in their newfound freedom.

In addition, marriage rates among black women remain low. Only about 30 percent of black women are living with a spouse, according to the Census Bureau, compared with about 49 percent of Hispanic women, 55 percent of non-Hispanic white women and more than 60 percent of Asian women.

In a relatively small number of cases, the living arrangement is temporary, because the husbands are working out of town, are in the military or are institutionalized. But while most women eventually marry, the larger trend is unmistakable.

Well, that's true. And as another poster to you stated, probably best that you don't!

(Not a knock on you. After all, I agree with you much of the time!)

But then again, you never know....!

I once said I'd never date a guy with a non-American car. I softened. Although, lucky for me my man does NOT have 1! ;-D

"I looked around at the folks I know, not a one is "looking elsewhere" for a wife...I wonder about guys that need to "look elsewhere", I suspect something wrong with them..."

First let me reveal - I've been married to the same blue blood American southern gal for 45 years..and that the young men and women I've been in closest contact with in California have been engineers working in Silicon Valley's high tech industries...

These guys are NOT the typical "mail order bride" customers.... In fact NONE used the "service"... all met their future brides in person while on work location in those countries...or while the professional ladies were in America on a business or training trip to our California plant site..

I was astounded to see how many of these educated and well grounded young men were passing up the "local" California gals to marry girls from their small hometowns, or foreign assignment posts. Japan, Australia, China, Iran and Montreal,Canada -- in that order ranked highest in the locations that these young men were bringing home wives... The young women engineers, for the most part were already involved with some guy back home or with one of their male peers at the office.. Too bad there there too few of these educated professional girls to go around.

My own son -- met his Canadian wife while in School here in the U.S.... My daughter married an American born son of teachers who had spent his childhood and early adult life on Pacific Islands..

This all happened -- in Kalifornicate! Land of some of the world's most beautiful women...
Unfortunately -- too many of these Kalifornicate ladies are dumb as a dead battery and have the morals of an ally cat..

Nicer guys often go to some length to tone down their masculinity so as to not appear threatening or 'like the other guys.' That makes no sense - they are toning down sex appeal and expecting a stronger sexual response.

This is learned behavior, and the important question is: what elements in our society are teaching men that they need to act this way? And almost nobody on FR likes to look squarely at the answers (Hint: it sure ain't Gloria Steinem...)

The nice guy/jerk complex has been going on for quite a long time - read Jane Austen and you'll see the exact same dynamics were at work 200 years ago. There are straightforward solutions to it, but they are off-topic for FR and as you well know most of the men here won't listen, anyway. ;)

(PS: You never explained what your tagline comes from...)

I haven't seen that in under-30 women. I've seen some of it in the 40-55 age group, but less than is popularly believed.

The under-30s I interacted with were in marketing/advertising, if that's any qualifier.

Jeff...My husband cooks, cleans, cleans the kitty litter, AND does all the ironing. He also fishes, hunts, builds things and looks sexy doing it all...It has nothing to do with what a man does that is a measure of his sexiness, my dear. You can take that to the bank.

Maybe the men who do that want to marry a woman like dear old mom. You have to admit that morals and values have declined greatly (in men as well as in women) in the past 40 years.
I dont think men have changed as much as women. I am not placing blame. I am just saying that feminism has changed lots of women for the worse. As women behave worse, men happily follow along. After all, many men are dogs anyway. We visit bars and whore houses and get liquored up.
Now women are behaving the same way.
It also seems to be getting much worse. Look at the moms and dads who let their little girls dress like britney. Mass media is bringing women down faster then men.
