51% of Women Are Now Living Without Spouse
New York Times ^ | 16 January 2007 | Sam Roberts

For what experts say is probably the first time, more American women are living without a husband than with one, according to a New York Times analysis of census results.

In 2005, 51 percent of women said they were living without a spouse, up from 35 percent in 1950 and 49 percent in 2000.

Coupled with the fact that in 2005 married couples became a minority of all American households for the first time, the trend could ultimately shape social and workplace policies, including the ways government and employers distribute benefits.

Several factors are driving the statistical shift. At one end of the age spectrum, women are marrying later or living with unmarried partners more often and for longer periods. At the other end, women are living longer as widows and, after a divorce, are more likely than men to delay remarriage, sometimes delighting in their newfound freedom.

In addition, marriage rates among black women remain low. Only about 30 percent of black women are living with a spouse, according to the Census Bureau, compared with about 49 percent of Hispanic women, 55 percent of non-Hispanic white women and more than 60 percent of Asian women.

In a relatively small number of cases, the living arrangement is temporary, because the husbands are working out of town, are in the military or are institutionalized. But while most women eventually marry, the larger trend is unmistakable.

Another handicap many single mothers have is that many men just don't want to get involved in a long term relationship with a woman with children. Not all, but many. I know I never would

To each his own Hitman, but you're limiting yourself there, imo. I'm a step-father and its been one of the most rewarding things about my life. But of course if that isn't for you I respect your decision on the matter. There aren't many things worse than a bad step-parent.

...lots easier to get all the welfare when single. free food, cash assistance, medical insurance, cheap housing, utilities paid, free daycare, huge tax breaks, etc. also, child support is not counted when looking at their income. A woman could be getting thousands a month in child support, but working part time for low pay, and get everything handed to her by the government. All she has to pay for is her car.

That about sums it up. Look closer and you'll see that the job (or one of the jobs) is probably "under the table" so as to preserve as much taxpayer-funded benefit as possible. Not sure about the "thousands a month" in child support, though. I know a few childless women that enjoy all the other benefits, and still have the money to take lavish vacations a couple of times a year.

Another question is why some women do not want to be with a spouse. Do they really prefer the single life? Or have they given up on finding prince charming? Or what?

What I've noticed......

Women work. They marry a man that works. Everything is fine. Then, a child is born.
Now, the woman has two jobs, because she took the liberal bait that claims she's worthless without a "career."
That's why stay home moms have happy marriages. Both the husband and wife only have one job to worry about, and everything is fair.

Yes it is a limitation but not a terribly damaging one. The truth is there is no shortage of attractive, good women out there in the dating pool at any given time. If there was a shortage of choice I would adjust. There isn't, so there's no need for me to compromise there.

The barriers regarding divorce are simply too lopsided. OK, a man wants to leave his wife and the system makes him "pay" for it through the financial settlement in divorce. Fair enough, he chose to leave and therefore he must pay equitably. So when the husband chooses divorce, he does this knowing the penalty.

Not what happens on the flip side, where is the barrier to the woman who wants to leave her husband? It doesn't exist, the husband still faces the same "penalty" even when he does not initiate the divorce. A sane system would reverse this - but it will never happen, because the wife is looked upon as the "victim", initiating the divorce of the "evil husband", and therefore should face no penalty in doing so.

And the trickle down effect of this is - men fear marriage, because they fear being caught up in the financial ruin of divorce, even if they do not initiate it. Until society deals with this simple fact, marriage rates will continue to decline.

Fortunately in this day and age, marriage isn't the only way to financial security

Unfortunately, it seems a number of women consider it the easiest way.

many men just don't want to get involved in a long term relationship with a woman with children.

I've known many single women with children ... co-workers, tenants in my apartment buildings, fellow political activists, voters in precincts I work, etc. Virtually all of these women say they want a spouse. Most (but not all) of them are physically attractive and have OK personalities.

I've seen both men who would make good spouses and men who would not chase after them. The women overwhelmingly reject the hard working, sober men who would make good spouses. The women overwhelmingly hook-up for short term relationships with men who provide them with entertainment and excitement, even when that excitement is domestic violence, cheating on them, financial irresponsibility, etc.

Tattooed, half naked in public, jumping into the sack with at the drop of a hat and then burdened with the result of that "free and self expressive" life......Loud, uncouth, unclean, unnatural, unfeminine, tattoos, bastard children in tow, drug dependent and a potential carrier of STDs...

I couldn't agree more, and the above statement can't be repeated enough.

men do not go to the doctor more often when there is something wrong. Also my experience with Diabeties has shown that men don't follow the doctors orders when they should

Like I said. They see no reason to prolong the misery

Who in hell wants to marry the current version of "woman" that far too many women in America represent?

Tattooed, half naked in public, jumping into the sack with at the drop of a hat and then burdened with the result of that "free and self expressive" life...

I doubt that describes 1% of the ladies who visit Free Republic. However, there are many who do indeed fit your description, and it's going to get worse. To think, some young girls admire the likes of Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton. Morals in this country are declining faster than our former president would drop his pants. The media made him out to be a hero when he was in fact, a lowlife hound dog. Feminism, the touted gay lifestyle, government giveaways, the left - they're responsible.

Liberalism in America has reached a milestone. One of the tenets of Liberalism is to creat as many single female households as possible because single women are more likely to look to the government for assistance than married women especially if they have children. Replace a husband and father with a government check. They have won, all that's left is the celebration.

My ex left me for his bimbo, and I didn't get child support. After the divorce, I worked full time, went to college (received an engineering degree in 5 years), raised 3 kids, who were 4, 7 and 8. He was a professional, and the bimbo eventually left him for another guy. He had to pay all the back child support, and decided to be a 'dad'. Now that he's in his 50's, he's finally settled down. He's on marriage number 4.

"A person tends to be rejected by the opposite sex for substantive, rather than shallow reasons."

You are making a HUGE leap of faith there.

Sometimes, the problem really is with those who reject.

Being popular doesn't mean you're a catch.
