Another question is why some women do not want to be with a spouse. Do they really prefer the single life? Or have they given up on finding prince charming? Or what?

What I've noticed......

Women work. They marry a man that works. Everything is fine. Then, a child is born.
Now, the woman has two jobs, because she took the liberal bait that claims she's worthless without a "career."
That's why stay home moms have happy marriages. Both the husband and wife only have one job to worry about, and everything is fair.

Fair until he dies or is laid off. An educated woman should never let her job skills get rusty. Especially if she was trained in a technical field. I know couples where an extended layoff (or strike in one case) forced her back into the job market. The best 2 women could come up with after 8 years off was teacher's aides.

Another maintained a tenured teaching job throughout her kids' childhoods, but was home summers and holidays. When husband was laid off (local hospital closed, took 2 years to find new job at comparable salary) she picked up hours at the Gap at night. Incidently, she was earning over $80,000 per year. Even with child care costs, she couldn't afford to quit her job.

Once the kids are in school full time, honing one's job skills or continuing education is important. $35,000+ per year in college tuition for each kid, looms up pretty fast. Financial aid is very tight, many couples can't save that kind of money on one salary while paying a mortgage and car payments.

Your post reminds me of a several folks I know. One stay-at-home college graduate delivered her second child and within months her husband was busy keeping himself happy with an employee. Shoot, now that I think about it, he may have been carousing around while his trophy was pregnant. Problem arose, so to speak, when employee/exemployee became preggers herself. I wonder if The Other Woman wishes she were a stay-at-home Mom nowadays, enjoying watching her children grow up.

After writing the above, it became clear why so many women are single. They either thought they had the perfect man and married him, only to find out later that he's not so perfect. Or they thought they had the perfect man who would divorce the stupid, stay-at-home ditz and marry the brainy, liberated Woman.

It is a sad state this world is in. And the next President of the United States will be . . .
