DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A man accused of breaking into a Daytona Beach home was shot by the homeowner Tuesday night, according to police.
Thomas Lockhard, 28, is in critical condition at Halifax Medical Center after being shot just after 10 p.m. at a house on Orange Avenue in Daytona Beach.
Police said they responded to a 911 call from the homeowner, whose house had already been burglarized three times this week, and found Lockhard suffering from a bullet wound.
"This kid, who is known to the guy who's already filed three police reports, tells him he's going to kill him, and with that, the homeowner feels he has no other choice but to fire (his gun)," Daytona Beach Police Chief Michael Chitwood said.
An investigation into the shooting is under way.

Apparently, the fourth time wasn't the "charm" for the perp.

He was 28 and still referred to as a kid. Is this one of those kids referred to in the reports about gun violence.

Holy Stakeouts, Batman, how should the police have reacted after the second break-in? I hear ya. The police do not prevent crimes from happening. They investigate crimes after the fact (in between writing traffic citations). It's up to you to protect yourself.

They investigate crimes after the fact (in between writing traffic citations). It's up to you to protect yoursThe police mostly enforce the revenue enhancing laws (seat belt, speeding, etc.) for a several reasons - not particularly risky, easy to do, and best of all it makes money for their employer. Catching burgulars doesn't add anything to the government's pelf, takes a lot of effort, and uses resources that could better be spent on collecting fines.

Someone comes into my house through the window and they will be killed.I'll do my darndest to do the same. Likewise if they're coming through the door that they've broken down. I have a few surprises in store for house breakers (at least if I'm present)

I'm nitpicking, but the way things are phrased makes a difference.
If the burglar is only a "suspect", then it should be said that the homeowner only "allegedly" shot him. Same level of proof should be required.

Great point, but a modicum of common sense would be required and you know where it goes from there...
