He may be. It's very sad. I hope it's not too late for him.

If someone could get him going in the right direction, a kid with that kind of desire, drive and wits could go a long way.

He probably used his mother's credit card and bought a ticket online.

The story says that he talked his way on... he said that his mom was in the boarding area already, and apparently the check-in desk was waiting for a solo kid who was meeting his mom at the gate. That isn't uncommon.

The real question is, did this kid take a lucky guess, did he somehow find out this info (incredibly unlikely, unless eavesdropping near the counters), or did the check-in girl not want to doubt a child (they NEVER lie!!!!) and just printed something out for him so that he won't get left behind.

One article said that he claimed to be afraid of a child molester in the area.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was a lie told by the child to get out of the situation. The kid obviously knows how to con people. People want to believe children, especially when it comes to things like that.

He talked the gate agent into issuing him a boarding pass but according to the story he had a number for a valid reservation. You get this information when you buy an e-ticket online. I think it's much more likely that he got this info by purchasing a ticket himself -- if he somehow used another passenger's number then there would have been two people trying to check in on the same ticket.
