WASHINGTON - Former Rep. Bob Ney was sentenced Friday to 30 months in federal prison for his role in a congressional bribery scandal.
Ney, the first congressman ensnared in the case, pleaded guilty to trading official favors for golf trips, tickets, meals and campaign donations from disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle said that Ney would serve his time at a federal prison in Morgantown, West Virginia.
When he is released, the judge said, Ney will serve another two years on probation and pay a $6,000 fine. She also ordered him into a prison alcohol rehabilitation program for treatment of a drinking problem he has acknowledged in recent months.
The sentence was harsher than recommended by prosecutors or Ney's lawyers, Huvelle said, because Ney had violated the trust place on him as a public official. "Both your constituents and the public trusted you to represent them honestly," she said.
TOPICS: Crime/Corruption
KEYWORDS:
That's just not enough. Corrupt public officials should be placed in a special class and their sentences automatically trebled. I hope Ney's time isn't easy.

Another Abramoff/DeLay Republican bites the dust.
On Wednesday Republicans in the Senate refused to allow passage of ethics rules that would preven convicted Republicans like Bob Ney from receiving their U.S.Government pensions. Would anybody care to defend Repbulican Sen. Mitch McConnell against the majority leader, Sen. Harry Reid on the ethical standards issue?

He's going to the male version of ""Camp Cupcake" (think Martha Stewart)
A minimum-security facility generally has a single fence that is watched, but not patrolled by armed guards. At facilities in very remote and rural areas, there may be no fence at all. Prisoners may often work on community projects, such as roadside litter cleanup with the state Department of Transportation. Many states now allow persons in minimum-security facilities access to the Internet.

I'm only sorry it wasn't longer. People like him have cost this country and our party dearly. I hope he's proud of himself.

Care to offer a bit of support for that?

The bill, as passed, also will bar lawmakers from accepting gifts and trips paid for by lobbyists; force former senators to wait two years before lobbying their former colleagues; refuse pensions to lawmakers convicted of serious crimes; require senators to pay full charter rates when they accept rides on private jets; and prevent spouses of sitting senators from lobbying the Senate. The bill also establishes new reporting and disclosure rules for lobbyists.

Ney should have known the rules that Lobbyist-Bribers follow:
If you are going to bribe a Congressman, bribe a Republican. If the bribe becomes public knowledge, the Republican goes to jail. If you bribe a Democrat and the bribe becomes public knowledge, YOU go to jail.

Republican Jim DeMint had an amendment to S.1, the 'ethics' facade that Reid proposed. DeMint wanted the restrictions that the House passed, but Reid disagreed and led a Democratic vote against it. Fortunately, Senators like Joseph Lieberman voted for the DeMint amendment, and we got better ethics legislation.

Do you ever have a single thought or political opinion which doesn't come off of a DNC talking point memo?
I've been around here several years now, but I've never read any post of yours which is anything but talking points minus any support facts.
But of course I'm sure your so much more intelligent than us other freepers you just have to keep it simple.

For those who are always quick to bash AP for their bias, notice no where does it say "(R-OH)."

That doesn't help. The old cry of "your old man is one too" doesn't make it ok for the GOP to allow a crook like Ney to destroy what so many have worked so hard to build.

When 14 Clintonistas were tried and convicted, spin meisters griped that money spent on investigations was a waste even after Clinton admitted wrongdoing and was disbarred. So far the culture of corruption has produced Ney's penny anti graft and Cunningham's blatant corruption. We have deLay indicted by a dubious prosecutor and a weird process crime trial for Scooter Libby.
As usual, Dems try to divert attention from their own wrongdoing by asserting tht everybody does it. In my mind, there is no comparison, but it is clear that Dems with try to take out their opponents by any means necessary. Their propaganda does not need to be supported by facts.

I think that's what happened with that scumbag Cisneros when he worked for Clinton. The bribers took the fall, but Cisneros, who accepted the bribes, never paid a price. They treated him with kid gloves because he was their boy, the superstar Hispanic in Clinton's "looks-like-America" cabinet.
