Tancredo irked about Dems' Spanish-language speech
By M.E. SPRENGELMEYER, Scripps Howard News Service (Published: January 19, 2007)
WASHINGTON (SH) - Press "1" for English. Press "2" for Spanish.
But make a foreign-language speech in the U.S. Capitol, and you're sure to press Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo's buttons.
Colorado's most famous culture warrior scoffed Thursday when told that Sen. Ken Salazar of Colorado would make a Spanish-language version of the Democrats' annual State of the Union preview speech.
"I must admit to you, the first thing that comes to mind is this is the kind of thing that would happen in a bilingual country - for instance, Canada," Tancredo said in an interview. "I've been saying for a long time, we're fast approaching that status: a bilingual country. I don't think that's a good idea. I think it's something that brings us apart, not together."
Top Democratic leaders have delivered a speech before President Bush's State of the Union address each year to offer their own perspective on issues facing the country. Because it involves criticism in advance, it's sometimes called the "prebuttal" speech. Bush's speech to Congress and the nation takes place Tuesday night.
This year, the new Senate majority leader - Nevada Democrat Harry Reid - and the new House speaker - California Democrat Nancy Pelosi - will split the duties with a joint appearance at the National Press Club in Washington.
For the first time, Democrats wanted to deliver a Spanish-language version. So they tapped Salazar, the Centennial State's bilingual junior senator, to do the honors in a room at the U.S. Capitol.

No comprendo por que senor Tancredo no quiere hablar en Espanol?
Es la lingua de los Conquistadores!
No es Mexicana, es Europa!
...guess our friends can't find the SAP button on their TV'S
Yo espero que tengas puestas tus pantaletas a prueba de fuego. REA!

Could give new meaning to Punch one for English. Punch two of 'em for Spanish.
Of course the article is slanted to translate to, "Tancredo hates Hispanics."
Ich kann auch spanisch nicht lesen oder sprechen. Und fur mir dass ist ausgezeichnet.
he has my vote...
Tancredo is no hero in our house, but this time, he`s right as rain! Watch the MSM hide this one

Alguien debe silbar como una bala danés.
Of all the issues where the media has a leftwing bias -- and that would be just about every single one -- it is perhaps the most hopelessly biased on immigration.
I know some think that Tancredo brings it on himself with the 'controversial' things he says, but the truth is that anyone who leads the charge against multiculturalism, amnesty, and mass immigration will be demonized, no matter how kind or gentle the person is in his rhetoric.
Switzerland is another example. At least three languages there. Great country. Very capitalist. Language isn't Canada's problem.
I like the way Tom screams into the Hurricane.
He's not the only one who is irked! I see red every time I go to my bank's ATM machine, insert my card, get "Hello, Theresawithanh, what language should we talk in?" Grrrrr!
Got flamed the first time I posted this, but it's aggravating.
Did he protest when Bush's nephew gave a speech in Spanish at the Republican National Convention in 2000?
Technically, Canada isn't offically "bilingual".
That is, there are two official languages, but you don't have to offer simultaneous translations everywhere. Yes it's on the cornflake boxes, and the federal government does it with all its services, as do some provinces, but many provinces don't, and aren't required to.
And there's only one offically bilingual province - and it's not Quebec.
Don't worry, I speak English.
Aeeeeyiiiii Carumba!
For the first time, Democrats wanted to deliver a Spanish-language version.
I'm tempted to say the Dems are willing to destroy our republic in order to obtain power but I'm not sure the destruction isn't their goal.
ATM's giving us options? This will destroy the Republic!
"And there's only one offically bilingual province - and it's not Quebec. "
New Brunswick?
Save it, idiot! My point being, I am an English-speaking American living in America, where English is the spoken language. Why should I have to be asked if I want to communicate in another language. If you're gonna live here, you should be able to speak and understand enough English to get along.
Yup.
New Brunswick is about 1/3 "Acadien".
All that to say his pants are on fire?
Somebody that can get national attention has to do it. Kudos to Tom & he's got my vote.
Thats right! Integrate or get out. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I completely agree with you!
I yell into the phone everytime I get one of those "Press 1 for English and 2 for Spanish" recordings. (Stupid I know! lol)
Tancredo for President!
I like Tancredo too. What I was disputing was the very tendency of many (who claim to agree with some or most of what Tancredo stands for) to say that Tancredo has hurt himself and his movement with his rhetoric, which is deemed offensive and insensitive by the thought police. I contend that anyone who fights against multiculturalism and mass immigration (legal and/or illegal) will be demonized by the Left.
A good example is the flack that Samuel Huntington -- Harvard liberal and self-professed Kerry supporter -- took for his most recent book about the troubles we are experiencing with current immigration policy. If various spokesmen for the various ethnic grievance groups felt it necessary to take the time to attack an academic unknown to 99% of the population, who is also a fellow liberal, then that shows that noone is safe from the name-calling and demagoguery these groups make their living on.
No. You are an English speaker. The United States of America has never been a one language country in practice. There have always been aboriginal people living in North America speaking their own languages. The Spanish made it to the Americas first and they brought their language with them. Much of the South was once owned by France and thus you have the Cajuns speaking a dialect of French in that area. Spanish has always been spoken by many in the South West. Chinese in the various China towns....
Need I go on?
It would be more accurate for you to say 'English is the official language of the United States'. But note, it is important to say 'the United States of America' and not just America. English is not the spoken or official language for most of the Americas- of which the USA is just a part. The entire continent of South America uses mainly Spanish and Portugese. A large portion of North America use Spanish.
Beautiful language by the way.
>>Und fur mir dass ist ausgezeichnet.<<
Should read: "Und für MICH ist DAS ausgezeichnet." ("Mir" is the dative form of the pronoun, but the preposition "für" requires the accusitive case here. And the word "dass" with "ss" or "ß" is used only to introduce a subordinate clause; it is not a relative pronoun.)
You're welcome!
Sie haben richtig. Danke shoen.
Evidently, others have, too. I have noticed that is no longer an option on phone menus. It will say, in Spanish, that if you want Spanish, press 2 (or something). Otherwise, it will continue in English.
Je ne comprenez pas.
One of the ugliest languages on earth.
I disagree. Arabic is much uglier. As is German. Although I found German easier to learn than Spanish. I really enjoy reading in Spanish. I don't mind reading French either but hate speaking it, I have a lot of trouble with the pronunciation.
Italian is a beautiful language as well and it will be next on my 'to learn' list.
Spanish is beautiful. My opinion. Thanks for your opinion.
German was so easy for me to learn that I hardly ever studied. I grew up listening to Polish (didn't learn it though). I like the Slavic languages. Still can't abide listening to spanish. It's like mumbling with a few rolling r's thrown in.
Arabic is another 'ugly' language.
[From yesterday] "All that to say his pants are on fire?"
No. That's telling Paloma that she (assumption) "better be wearing flame-retardant underpants, LOL".
Yeah, whatev, dude. You see it your way, I see it mine.
If I ever moved to another country where English wasn't the official language, I WOULD HAVE TO ADAPT. There would be no "press 1 for English". Those who come to America should do the same.
Exactly right.
If I legally moved to the corrupt country of Mexico, could I take a driver license test in Spanish? Could I even get a driver license?
