Mr. Hensarling represents the 5th District of Texas. He is chairman of the Republican Study Committee.

Problem is the GOP had a chance for real reform in the past 6 years and they did nothing but feast on pork. Even when the voters took that away from them they STILL don't get it.
The GOP needs to clean house. Until then, all the old promises won't mean jack.

Exactly right. The D's like pork just as well as the R's (if not better) but they're the ones that turned it into a weapon and won. Now the R's need to get serious.

Making Healthcare More Affordable and Personal At the same time that illegals get it for free. Do we have some kind of disconnect here???

Once they rid themselves of conservatives they'll happily be the Democrat's mini-me and it'll be great.

Yet another clueless Republican. Nuff said.

By altering our tax code to empower more Americans to assume greater control over their own healthcare,QUIT SCREWING WITH THE TAX CODE!!!!!!!!!!!
Whatever benefit some poor schmo derives from a new tax break, it will be offset by having to pay a CPA (like me) to prepare his income tax return.
Alterations to the tax code take away productive time from individuals and businesses.
Simplifying the tax code and cutting unnecessary regulations used to be a major plank of the Republican Party. I guess these bozos like being in the minority.

Ping.
Might need to save this for my "Why I am no longer a Republican" letter

You nailed that. I call them Volvo conservatives. They spent their first twenty years voting with their lefty buddies. Now that they make money in education or social services they are feeling the tax pinch. They still want their socialist programs: They just don't want to pay for them anymore.

Marketing would help a lot, too. The GOP has botched the marketing of its agenda so much lately.
The Terri Schiavo situation was a classic example - they never really cogently explained what they were doing. The result: they alienated lots of people.
They need to sell their ideas better. A hostile media is a reason that they have problems in this area, but it's not an excuse.
By my scorecard the GOP is quite a while away from regaining control of Congress. Odds are that in 2008 they will lose a little more ground in the Senate, and if they get a lot of breaks maybe gain 6 to 8 seats in the House (though if a popular dem wins the presidency in 2008 they could easily lose 6-8 more House seats).
Improving the damaged GOP and Conservative brand names is essential. Much better marketing is necessary to a long term strategy to gain back the lost political power.

Either they are all delusional or we are living in the Twilight Zone.
I can't figure out which it is.

"It is time to focus on what is best for the future of America rather than what is best at the ballot box. The Democrat majority, who continually reject the plans offered by our Commander-in-Chief, must be honest with the American people about the consequences of failure in Iraq. And, if they do not support America's mission in Iraq, as the majority they have the responsibility to offer their own plan that they feel IS in the interest of the United States and the obligation to vote in a manner consistent with their commentary to the media."
He's right, so when will the Republicans begin demanding that the dems do so?

Well, marketing ain't gonna do it for me.
I've only going to vote for a true conservative - not just because he/she is a republican. Been there/done that.
They fooled me for 12 years.
First they said if only we had Congress - so I worked - we all did - and gave money and voted for them.
Then they said if only we had the Congress and the White House - so I worked - we all did - and gave money and voted for them.
Then I waited - surely now with all three Houses - and we waited - and hoped - and made excuses.
But they were too busy re-arranging K Street and forgot about Main Street.
I know the dems are big spenders and have scandals too - but at least I didn't vote for them. At least they didn't try to tell me they were the party of family values - of faith based values. The dems are a lot more honest about how corrupt they are.
Sorry, you fooled me for 12 years - you won't fool me again.
I will be voting for Duncan Hunter. He is my congressman and I think I know his record. He is a true conservative with no major scandals that I know of.
But if he doesn't get the nomination...I will not vote for a RHINO or a non-conservative republican. Because I might as well have a democrat: policies are the same, corruption is the same.
I hope the Republican Party reads this board.
