Urgent Prayer Request for My Young Cousin, Severe Head Injury - Update at #2982

Edited on 02/14/2007 3:30:51 PM PST by Admin Moderator. [history]

My aunt and uncle sent this out to our family at 6:30 AM today. Carrie is my young cousin, a very gifted artist, and the second eldest among her siblings. She and her family are in Michigan.

Prayer reqeust from my aunt and uncle (Carrie is their granddaughter).

This morning on her way to work Carrie's car slid on the highway and into a tree. She has very bad injuries, especially to her head. Her brain is swelling and she is now in surgery. They plan to open her skull to allow for the swelling, and she is not responding.

They don't give her parents a lot of hope. We are telling everyone so you can join us in praying for our dear Caroline. They called her parents about 7:45 this morning and they're at the hospital now.

Just got this from Carrie's sister 'L" in reply, after sending input from this thread:

This is SO encouraging. Thank you Gretchen for continuing to keep the troops informed.

I do believe your posts are to the family like a pitcher of ice-cold lemonade in a desert place, and even more than that, affirmations of all their dearest hopes and a support to them. It reminds me of how Moses' assistants had to hold up his arms when Israel was fighting, to keep the battle going FOR Israel. The family hasn't grown as weary as Moses did in that terrific battle -- I am sure this is due to the many prayers that continue to be prayed for them.

Exodus 17:8-15
8 While the people of Israel were still at Rephidim, the warriors of Amalek came to fight against them.
9 Moses commanded Joshua, "Call the Israelites to arms, and fight the army of Amalek. Tomorrow, I will stand at the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand."
10 So Joshua did what Moses had commanded. He led his men out to fight the army of Amalek. Meanwhile Moses, Aaron, and Hur went to the top of a nearby hill.
11 As long as Moses held up the staff with his hands, the Israelites had the advantage. But whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites gained the upper hand.
12 Moses' arms finally became too tired to hold up the staff any longer. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side, holding up his hands until sunset.
13 As a result, Joshua and his troops were able to crush the army of Amalek.

15 Moses built an altar there and called it "The LORD Is My Banner."

Update July 8

From my aunt and uncle

Carrie continues to show improvement, but slowly. We are both impressed by the quality of the nurses who take care of Carrie. They are a very caring group. Some love her as if she were their daughter. They read the newspaper, books, Bible, etc. to her. They talk to her continually, exercise her, and keep her looking beautiful and clean.

Now a speech therapist comes to work with her swallowing. We think he's good and good for her. He will come again next Wednesday. M wants to videotape the Physical Therapist on Tuesday to show all the caretakers just what is done that is what she wants them to do for Carrie.

One nurse came to get us to see Carrie watching a DVD player playing "A Night At the Museum". She really was watching that. The nurse had it near so Carrie could watch it. We saw her eyes move. Great!

That same nurse shined a small flashlight in Carrie's eyes and she blinked. Which again is good news.

MJ, another nurse, brought some sweet peas from her garden and put them right up to Carrie's nose -- she wrinkled up her nose at the scent.

I am very encouraged by all these improvements and it heartens me to put my shoulder to the wheel to keep praying for Carrie's full restoration. Wow!

For all of you who have been standing with Carrie, drawing her through to keep her in life and now, to move her forward in her healing, THANK YOU!

That is really good news. Any improvement is good news, but this is especially good. When my mother was in the nursing home after an undefined episode, she couldn’t speak or communitcate at all, really, but I took her to the social area, where they were doing a puzzel, and my mother pointed to a piece of the puzzel and where it belonged. No one knew she could think that through, but she did. You can never know what is going on in the mind of someone who can’t physically respond.
