The Israeli government is building a massive war bunker in the hills outside Jerusalem a refuge for top government officials in the event of a biological, chemical or nuclear attack.
The maze of tunnels and underground rooms is scheduled to be completed in the next year or two as fears of an attack from Iran intensify, the Baltimore Sun reported.
Israels top intelligence officer told the Knesset last month that Iran could have a nuclear weapon by 2009, and Israelis increasingly fear that Tehran would seek to carry out Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejads threat to "wipe Israel off the map.
Ephraim Sneh, Israels deputy defense minister, said recently regarding Iran: "Imagine that this regime the powerhouse of terrorism in the region, with its ambitions of expansion and domination of the entire region would have the power of nuclear blackmail. What would life in this region look like? Not only [for] Israel, but other countries as well.
A November poll by the Israeli newspaper Maariv found that 66 percent of Israelis believe Iran, if it develops a nuclear weapon, would try to use a bomb to destroy Israel.
Several dozen wealthy Israelis have already constructed personal bomb shelters, according to the Sun.
But Meir Javedanfar, the Tehran-born director of the Middle East Economic and Political Analysis Company in Tel Aviv, expressed doubts that Iran would launch a nuclear attack against Israel, which is widely assumed to have a sizeable nuclear arsenal of its own.
"The nuclear capability will give Iran new means to attack Israel if it decides to do that, said Javedanfar, co-author of a new book on Irans nuclear program.
"The question is, would Iran attack Israel with a nuclear bomb? I think its extremely unlikely. The regime in Iran is not suicidal. The country is managed by leaders who are on the face of it fundamentalists, but in fact they are very pragmatic.
Thanks ntnychik. I've had that a long time, almost forgot about it.
Very nice potlatch
Restraint
Ya, you remember that one. The UN told them to use 'restraint' during their short war last year?
John Bolton's recent comments on WABC about the new UN SG compared to Kofi are interesting
Illuminate me, does Bolton approve of the new UN SG? I seem to have missed that - among other things.
The regime in Iran is not suicidal.
With Allahdinnerjacket at the helm I would not bet on that
In Daniel, though the ancient name of Edom is used rather than the modern one of Petra:
He shall enter also into the Glorious Land (Palestine) and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom and Moab and the chief of the Children of Ammon.
[Daniel 11:41]
But though the Petra complex may profide refuge for a few Israeli Knesset members and upper-level functionaries, the Israeli military command and control facility, their version of our Cheyenne Mountain Complex in Colorado, is far from there, and has been for some time.
With Allahdinnerjacket at the helm I would not bet on that
With Iranian unemployment now beyond 11%, inflation hovering at 50% and with half of the petroleum that they use for domestic purposes refined outside the country, it'd be more accurate to describe their position as potentially desperate. And desperation can give rise to all sorts of short-term efforts with horrendous long-term results.
Excavation and construction for the USAF Cheyenne Mountain complex began on May 25, 1961 and took a total of four years and seven months to complete. Initial Operational Capability or "IOC" was achieved on December 15, 1965. The Cheyenne Mountain Complex became completely operational on January 1, 1966. *source*
I call BS, diversionary propaganda to mislead away from the real location.
