U.S. media jobs slashed 88 percent ...( job cuts SURGED in 2006)
UPI ^ | Jan. 25 -2007

U.S. media job cuts surged 88 percent in 2006 from the previous year, a downsizing trend expected to continue this year, a survey said Thursday.

The media industry slashed 17,809 jobs last year, a nearly two-fold increase from the 9,453 cuts in 2005, outplacement consultancy Challenger Gray & Christmas said.

The figure was the industry's largest annual job-cut total since 43,420 media job cuts accompanied the collapse of the technology bubble in 2001, the survey said.

"A sea change in the way people get and read news, not to mention the way they search for jobs, used cars and consumer products, was the primary contributor," the company said.

Media companies, including the New York Times Co. and Time Inc., have already laid off 2,000 employees in 2007, Challenger noted, saying the cuts suggested the downsizing trend would continue.

"These organizations will continue to make adjustments as their focus shifts from print to electronic," Chief Executive John Challenger said. "Until they can figure out a way to make as much money from their online services as they are losing from the print side, it is going to be an uphill battle."

As I mentioned in comments (post #1)

The decline of the MSM drive by media is self inflicted and a joy to watch. The media long ago decided to swop spit with the DRats, and instead or reporting the news, they chose to 'interpret' the news.

Mike, you are so naive. MSM does not "interprit" the news. They do, however, manufacture the news. Thanks for making me think of this. I have to do everything. s/

And they wonder why they're out of work.

I still get the Sunday dead-tree paper delivered, partly so I can play the Sunday-morning game of "spot the headline that doesn't match the story". Usually have about 2-3 by the time I get to page 5.

They even misspelled Rumsfeld's name in a page-one Sunday-edition headline, then didn't bother to respond to my email about it. Which might explain why they made a similar mistake 2 weeks later.

And to think--they STILL don't get it!

Neither does Err Amerika.

Liberal AM radio (Air America) fails to pay its own way, even in Santa Cruz: Fairness Doctrine

"That is alot of socialists looking for work..."

The best part is their total and complete refusal to recognize that their difficulties are at least partly self-created and could be fixed before going belly-up. As long as they wear blinders, this will be a headline for many more January's until most of their jobs have vanished.

This is proof that conservative media needs to be controlled. Look at the effect it's having. I propose a fairness doctrine that would not allow conservative viewpoints in any media. There must also be equal time legislation that allows public funding of liberal media to guarantee a more balanced media. Government should lift Air America and others out of their negative financial state and fund them entirely with taxpayer funds and should also pay for the education of liberal students at Columbia and elsewhere. It is alarming that so many jobs are lost in the MSM which in effect silences liberals and supports conservative viewpoints. It's only fair. /sarc off

There are at least two reasons why they are doing badly economically: 1) Their bias has driven away large segments of their audience; 2) The internet is competing with them for ad money, especially classified ads. Having sunk so deeply into the gutter of bias, they will find it very difficult to climb out, because now they can only gain conservative readers by offending their remaining leftist readers.

There are also several reasons why they are less and less worth reading: 1) Leftist bias. 2) Less and less reporting of the facts, so there is a very low signal to noise ration. You have to listen to half an hour of blather to pick up one or two facts, and the most important facts may never be reported at all. 3) Less and less intelligence or common sense. It seems as if every year the arts, science, fashion, religion, movie, and other specialized reporters are getting stupider and stupider. 4) Less and less professionalism. More typos, more clumsy and dull writing, more over-the-top venting of personal biases. No dignity, no decency, no sense of writing style. 5) And so forth.

I suppose none of this is surprising. It goes along with the decline in public education and journalism education. An intelligent conservative will probably make up for the deficiencies of public education with self education; a dumb liberal will just go with the flow, and it certainly shows.

Just take Maureen Dowd, for instance. Or Perky Katie. Or Frank Church. Or that arch-shaper of the media's problems, Pinch Sulzberger.

The media job cuts INCREASED by 88% over the previous year, but U.S. media jobs were not slashed 88%.
Quite a disappointment . . .
