Happy 102nd Birthday to Charles Lane! (Homer Bedloe)
Internet Movie Data Base ^ | Jan 26, 2007 | Self

Posted on 01/26/2007 9:01:22 AM PST by abb

Skinny, hatchet-faced, bespectacled American character actor, ubiquitous in literally hundreds of films. With his prominent nose, his rimless eyeglasses and his permanent scowl, he typically portrayed short-tempered and often loudmouthed bureaucrats, yes-men and other minor minions, principally in lighter fare.

I read not long ago he was still alive and was quite surprised. I remember him from some I Love Lucy shows which I saw in repeats. I guess when they originally aired he must have been in his 50s. Godspeed to him.

You know, every time he pops up in some old movie or sitcom, you have to say, "Geez! That guy's been around forever!" Well, almost.

Read his biography in the Internet Movie Database. He's done dozens of sitcoms, but usually not more than a couple of episodes of any of them. And he always looks the same!

Lane married his sweetheart Ruth Covell in 1931. They remained together until her death in 2002.

Wow, that's 71 years!!!!

I remember him from the Frank Capra classic "You Can't Take It With You".

Joseph Kearns was the original Mr. Wilson.

When he died in 1962, he was replaced by Gale Gordon.

That was Gale Gordon, famous from the Lucy Show. And he was the second Mr. Wilson.

Yep, he was good in The Quiet Man, too. Not as good as Barry Fitzgerald but good.

I'm feeling a little guilty...

I have Charles Lane in my Celebrity Death Pool for 2007. But, it's not a wish list by any means, it's just trying to figure out who's next. Fortunately for those that have made my list, I have never won the pool. ;-)

Happy 102nd B-Day to Charles Lane.

Not to step on your thread, but there is another oldtimer who turns 101 this May. Its Herman Blix, AKA. Bruce Bennett. Olympic champion and in movies since 1931. In 1935 he was chosen by Edgar Rice Burroughs to play Tarzan. Also was in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre with Bogie and Walt Huston.

Happy Birthday to the king of character actors

Thank you for posting this. It's good to see someone still appreciates his existence and believes that turning 102 is worthy of recognition. Obviously the main stream media doesn't agree.

In 1990, Lane was rushed to the hospital, having difficulty breathing. A doctor asked if he was still smoking, and Lane replied that he had kicked the habit 45 minutes earlier. He never smoked again.
