Kevin McCullough: Why liberals hate Christians
WorldNetDaily.com ^ | 1/26/07 | Kevin McCullough

Liberals in America despise Christians of true faith.

They do this because in doing so their own guilt is appeased, their anger is justified, and they can finally lay blame for their own misery at someone else's feet.

Last night, Alexandra Pelosi's newest documentary, "Friends of God," aired on HBO. In that Alexandra is the daughter of the nation's first feminist, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, it was all too easy to pre-judge where Alexandra's work would land. An expose to uncover the hidden secrets of evangelicals in America, produced by the leftist daughter of the most prominent liberal feminist in America – hmm, what would she say?

In fairness, the first 50 minutes of the hour-long presentation take us behind the scenes of some varied examples of Christians living out their faith – in bold ways. From the "Cruisers for Christ" car club to a family whom the producers attempted to cast as an off-shoot of "Big Love" (HBO's series surrounding a polygamist "family"), from a truck stop featuring a chapel service for weary drivers to a man who is attempting to place five giant crosses in every state of the union (to the cost of $25,000 per cross) – Pelosi's work is largely un-narrated. Yet even in the selection of the cuts used, Pelosi's point is clear: Cause Christians to appear as goofy, somewhat odd and backwards as possible. The fish-eye effect of the camera angles alone accomplish this without Pelosi having to comment over the footage.

At roughly minute 51, Pelosi turns even more sinister:

Off camera she asks, "So do you realize in places that I'm from, like San Francisco and New York, they think evangelicals are all haters. Like your truth is the only truth and everyone should believe the way you believe?" She asks this of the now disgraced Ted Haggard, former president of the National Association of Evangelicals.

His response, "If you believe anything, then some people feel bad about that. We say marriage is a heterosexual relationship between a man and a woman. We say that moral purity is better than immorality. We say telling the truth is better than telling a lie. And anytime we say anything, and we've got 1,500 pages of those things we say – the Bible – there are groups of people that are going to get nervous about that."

Pelosi then cuts to a graphic: "One year after this interview, Pastor Haggard was accused of having homosexual encounters with a male prostitute. He admitted this to his congregation: 'There is a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I've been warring against it all of my life.'"

Pelosi then turns the camera over to the most dishonest voice in the entire presentation. Mel White, a former ghostwriter for Jerry Falwell and now a gay activist, states, "Gay people love God and are in every church and have been since the beginning of recorded history."

He reads some of Falwell's fund-raising letters for the camera. Pelosi then follows him to a worship service at Falwell's church, which shows him weeping during the singing of God Bless America.

The message could not be clearer. Evangelicals are bizarre, odd, hypocritical and, yes, they hate gays.

Pelosi knows she's telling a lie. She even reveals it in one of the earlier cuts in dialogue with the man who is spending money out of his own pocket to place the crosses in different states. She comments to the soft-spoken man how amazed she is that "everyone" she has talked to has asked her to sit in their cars and try to win her to Christ. In one of the scenes with the homeschool family of 10, even though she remarks about how different her friends would view motherhood, she cannot help but laugh and coo a bit over the kids.

Pelosi knows that for the one voice of hypocrisy she documented in Haggard, she visited 100 pastors and churches that are committed to their calling, their families and their God.

The conviction she documents of younger Christians is striking in the episode. And she is even to be commended for allowing several strong points to at least be verbalized by her subjects, who were doing so ad lib and as the fish-eye lens distorted their facial features across the screen.

But for liberals, the resentment that will rise from her film toward Christians will be based in part on her out-of-context use of Haggard and White to make her point about homosexuality.

Though Haggard's life did not live up to his own words, the words are true nonetheless.

Saying that I believe in something and that what I believe is, in fact, authoritative and exclusive is offensive to those who do not believe. Moral purity (abstinence before marriage and fidelity in marriage, for life) is, in fact, a better life than one of multiple random partners. And telling the truth is better than telling a lie – even when it may embarrass some people.

Pelosi's real anger should not be directed at Christians, who are at best broken examples of what God is and is about. But rather, she should be angry with God Himself. It is He who says, "I am THE way, THE truth and THE life."

The saddest part of all of this is that while Pelosi sees the true peace, earnest conviction and real-life change in the Christians across the nation, she most likely believes herself to be beyond the reach of Christ or of acceptance by his people. What she and every liberal reading this would find instead is just the opposite.

While they may think that evangelicals are filled with hate, if they were but to ask, they would find instead the wellspring of grace, mercy and love.

Evangelicals know that we are all sinners, none righteous but Him. He calls us to follow Him. We are expected to, and in doing so we will see that life's economy runs best when following His plan. We do not behead those who choose not to; we simply want them to know the joy, peace, contentment and purpose we find in Him.

And it is the reality in seeing the joy, peace and contentment that we have and that they do not that drives liberals to draw angry conclusions.

Conclusions that will send them to a Godless eternity ...

Liberals see life as misery to be endured until the day you die. People of faith see life as happiness to be enjoyed until the day you die. Its all in how you look at it.

Good article my FRiend, and I can't help but ponder if (in an alternate universe) back when Republicans took over the House in '94, if the son of Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich had released a documentary revealing the lies and hypocrisy of the left, exposing the America-hating un-intelligentsia of (for example) New York and L.A. society, if there would be such fawning reviews of such a work as we're seeing with the daughter of 'Madam Speaker'?

Pelosi's spawn also proved what a bunch of cowards the Left is. Going after Christians is easy. They're not a threat. You can be as smug and condescending as you want to Christians and at no cost to yourself. In fact Pelosi's spawn will be celebrated at "courageous" & given accolades.

Islam on the other hand.........
I doubt Pelosi's spawn has the courage to do a similar "documentary" on Islam.

Gee I wonder if this woman is going to do a piece like this on Islam?

But rather, she should be angry with God Himself.

But those who reject God are angry with God and hate Him; they just can't get their hands on Him so they go after those who love Him and have a personal relationship with Him.

And yes, those who reject God hate Him, but don't forget the horrendous fear these people have deep within their souls- the fear of knowing, even if they don't consciously recognize it, that there is a God Who is a holy God and Who does not tolerate sin and rebellion and before Whom they will stand one day and be held accountable for their sin. A holy God Who offered a way of escape from eternal punishment by sacrificing Himself - a God Whose sacrifice they reject, a God Who they have spit on and ruthlessly worked to erase from the face of the earth. This is the God they innately know they will have to deal with someday.

Terror plays a huge part in what these people do.

Interesting timing. Is the daughter an alter ego of the mother ? Is she a mouthpiece for her mother's agenda ?

As Mama Pelosi launches her career as a national leader, this report suggests someone places a high priority on taking down religion in the public square.

Is this an harbinger of things to come ?

Oh but, true Evangelicals are a threat to the left liberal socialist scum. That is why they work so hard to defeat us. Unfortunately some of us are working really hard to defeat ourselves.

Ted Haggard and his ilk are doing more to damage Evangelical work, than Alexis Pelosi could ever do.

I will bet there is plenty of praying going on when liberals take their last breaths.

The Devil knows his time is short....and he is using clueless liberals to attack the Church and Faith....

America is reaping what she has sown.

Its time for all of us to get right with the Father....for that is the only solution to the appostacy of America.

But those who reject God are angry with God and hate Him; they just can't get their hands on Him so they go after those who love Him and have a personal relationship with Him.

While there are a few activist Atheists out there (usually college students new to the idea), most of us just prefer to be left alone to pursue our own lives. I don't hate anybody in general, I don't sit around all day fuming about believer-types. All you all spend a lot more time thinking about me than I do about you.

So many believers tell me that I'm afraid that God exists that I've started to wonder if they aren't just projecting their fear that there is no God onto me.

America is reaping what she has sown.

And that is the gist of it all.

The halcyon days of self-delusion are over and the bill has come due. I firmly believe that this nation is now under judgment: the killing of 45 million human beings will not go unpunished; the acceptance and celebration of behaviors which God declares is abominable will not go unpunished; the years of tolerance of those who have worked tirelessly to force atheism on everyone in this nation, including Christians, will not go unpunished; the systematic, decades-in-the-making twisting of good into evil and evil into good will not go unpunished- all of our rebellion against God as a nation has not gone unnoticed and will not be ignored.

Proverbs 14:34-34:

Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.

Nothing in Scripture exempts America from coming under judgment.

I don't want to say we're at the point of no return, but it would take a mass, nation-wide repentence and massive, immediate change in the direction we are well into to convince God to have mercy on this country. And, to be honest, I don't see that happening.

It is no coincidence Islamic pagans hate Israel, Jews, Christians and Western Civilization. The entire basis of Western Civilization is Mosaic Law, something both the Neo-Pagan Left and the pagan Islamic thugs cannot abide and wish to destroy.

The very idea that human beings have individual rights not subject to the whims of an earthly monarch, but subject to the laws of Yahweh, is directly from Moses.

Exactly. There's a terrible double standard in the media. I can't believe they don't see it; they just don't care to fix it.

All you all spend a lot more time thinking about me than I do about you.

Actually, the only time I think about atheists, aside from praying for people in general to find salvation, is when an atheist or an organizaton of atheists bursts onto the scene with some demand that will cost me my some or all of my religous freedom.

I have yet to see any group of Christians demanding that everyone be forced to attend church; however my children can be expelled from school for praying. That's the sort of thing that causes Christians to think about atheists.

So many believers tell me that I'm afraid that God exists that I've started to wonder if they aren't just projecting their fear that there is no God onto me.

Usually the simplist explanation for something is the correct one. What, exactly, would motivate someone to spend time and money to follow a group of people around, film them, use cutting-edge and daring camera techninques to make them look as much like goobers as possible, interject little commetaries during the film about what the subjects in the film believe- all for the purpose of discrediting them?

Why, for example, has no one infiltrated a militant abortion group, or a militant Muslim group, or a militant homosexual group that brainstorms and seeks methods to legalize adult-child sex? Why is it always Christians who have to be ridiculed and discredited? Hmmmmm?

Because it is the Christians and the One they represent who are the threat. And the people who feel compelled to shut us up do so based on their own base, natural emotions: hatred, contempt, and yes, fear

Not having seen the movie in question, I can't attest as to whether it was a hit piece or not. At first blush it sounds more like a "stranger in a strange land" film than anything else.

Why, for example, has no one infiltrated a militant abortion group, or a militant Muslim group, or a militant homosexual group that brainstorms and seeks methods to legalize adult-child sex? Why is it always Christians who have to be ridiculed and discredited? Hmmmmm?

Not sure about the abortion group one, but I know that there have been movies made about the other two groups. Can't think of the names off the top of my head, but if you want to find them you can.

What the heck? Just watch Dateline, or 60 Minutes, they have stories about pedophiles and crazy Muslims at least once a year.

Because it is the Christians and the One they represent who are the threat. And the people who feel compelled to shut us up do so based on their own base, natural emotions: hatred, contempt, and yes, fear.

I think that it's a lot more complex than that. Evangelicals are a fairly powerful voting bloc that's all but absent from the major cities in the mid-west and the costal megapolisis. To us up in these parts, some of the things that Evangelicals do and say look and sound mighty strange. Jerry Falwell's moronic comments about 9/11 or Pat Robertson's... being crazy old Pat Robertson, for example.

Now I haven't seen the film, so I might very well be wrong, but I imagine that Alex Pelosi is coming at the subject of Evangelicals as the ultimate outsider. I at least understand and share some of your conservative values, she does not or at least does not agree with them. From that outsider's perspective you're going to look unusual and probably a little scary. The fact that her point of contact for part of the film was Ted Haggard didn't help things either, and probably justified (in her mind) some of the biases that she brought to the documentary.
