I don't agree with him 100% on every issue

And you probably never will find someone you do with.

Huckabee looks pretty good to me overall, a lot better than McCain. I could vote for this guy without developing a rash.

Lowering taxes is one of the major core principles that distinguish the Republican platform from the Democrat platform. It's also one of the few remaining issues that nearly all Republican politicians agree on at present.

I have some serious misgivings about Mike Huckabee's commitment to this core conservative principle based on his wishy-washy position on the tax issue since announcing his candidacy.

I cringe when so-called conservatives take the WaPo at their word on everything they don't want to hear, without checking things out.

I've heard Huck speak on various TV shoes. He's sharp, well spoken, and talked a lot about conservative ideas. I don't recall the specific issues (I think they were economic), but I did come away fairly impressed. I do want to know about his views on the other important issues.

Glad to see you take time out from your Apple posts to deal with something worthwhile [/grin]!

Alf Landon, who admired FDR's New Deal but thought the Republicans could run it more efficiently, once remarked, "I have cooperated with the New Deal to the best of my ability." Is this your man?

He was a Governor of Kansas, a state in deep economic distress. Care to tell me what you would have done differently?

"does this guy pass the Fetus test?"

This phrase is as offensive towards Pro-Lifers as when the homosexuals refer to straights as "breeders."

I'm beginning to see some real hateful attitudes towards us Pro-Lifers on Free Republic and it really bugs me.

We are a CONSERVATIVE web site, as such, the Pro-Life attitude should be respected.

If you are pro-choice, fine...but stop putting us down because you disagree with us.

How did the New Deal improve the economy of Kansas--or, for that matter, any other state?

In any case, the GOP might have done better in 1936 had they nominated Robert A. Taft, a true conservative who ran that year as Ohio's favorite son. At least they couldn't have done much worse. Besides being a "me too," or, as we say today, a rino, Landon was a lousy campaigner.

He's already had enough problems in running the backwater state of Arkansas. Go easy on him.

I'm a native of Texas, but I'm an Arkansan now. They're both great states. In fact, all 50 states are great - and I try to refrain from slandering any of them.

Well, 46 states, as well as 61% of the American people at the time disagreed with you on the New Deal. Ronald Reagan, of course, was among the majority. Your "true conservative" argument is about as specious now as it was then. The American people soundly rejected the Taft ideology again and again in the 30's and 40's.

The libertarian Cato Institute gave him an “F” for his “insistence on raising taxes at almost every turn throughout his final term.”

“Will you, right here and now,” I asked, “pledge not to raise taxes if you’re elected President?”

Huckabee declined to take my pledge -- and by extension signaled that he won’t sign Americans for Tax Reform’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge. (Grover Norquist publicly ridiculed Huckabee on ATR’s Christmas card in 2006.)

That's a killer, in my opinion.

Was the 1946 election, which swept the Republican "Class of '46" into power, an endorsement of New Dealism and a rejection of Taft's ideas? I think not. And although Eisenhower narrowly won the party's presidential nomination from Taft at the 1952 RNC, his campaign themes of Korea, Communism, and corruption, which got him elected in a landslide, sounded closer to Taft's ideology than to FDR's.

You may not like it...But people you call RINOS are now driving the GOP bus. The Culture Warriors drivers license was revoked after the midterm bus wreck. That's why three " RINOS" lead the GOP pack and the Culture warriors are in single digits or *.

I take it you favor welfare state socialism and the nanny state.
