I believe that all the early Free Republic threads were deleated as part of the settlememt of a lawsuit by the LA Times and WaPo.I first found FR sometime in mid-1997. Lurked for awhile and first joined up around late 1997 or early 1998. I've always used the same screen name here. For some reason I never did figure out, my early registration kept getting reset every now and again, and I'd have to re-register with a different password. I finally "stuck" sometime in 1999. I don't think everyone of the earliest FR registrants had this experience, though.

I didn't have any tags open. I know. I don't know what made me remember that.
I wonder how many of us remember how screwed up a thread could become when someone forgot to close the HTML tags on their italics, bold, marquee, blinking text?

FreeRepublic went way, way back before BBS. There was a time where you had to drive down a specific street and see if there was a chalk mark on a telephone pole, which meant go to a place and look under a rock for mimeographs folded into a ziplock.
I can't talk anymore about this.
They, they're .....watching.

Came on F/R in 1996 through Drudge....Signed up in 97....Was using an old WebTv w/no cut and paste. Had to run out and buy newspapers....cut the articles out and type them in. What the hell....I was retired and didn't have anything else to do.. :>)

Good question, and fun thread! I have learned a lot about FR history.
I found out about FR from Drudge in November of 2000, you know, the days of the recounts that wouldn't stop? I lurked for a long time, too scared to post, but was overjoyed that there was a site where others felt the same way I did. Those days I mostly read The Dose Threads. I finally got past my fears and joined and started posting in December of 2001.

I came in July of 1998 under another nick because I was working for another "chat room" that wouldn't let me use Howlin over there and over here, too.
