Senator Tim Johnson Now Reading and Speaking In Sentences
New York Times ^ | 1 February 2007 at 4:15 p.m. | Sarah Wheaton

Posted on 02/01/2007 3:52:01 PM PST by shrinkermd

...“Simply put, he is reading,” said Dr. Philip Marion, the medical director for the rehabilitative medicine department. A reading test “showed that he is comprehending written material and successfully following written commands.” Mr. Johnson is also speaking in full sentences and initiating conversations.

“Tim is enjoying reading the many cards and letters from his friends across the state,” said Barbara Johnson, his wife. “One of his doctors described his progress to date as miraculous. There is no doubt in my mind that the many prayers that have been offered for his recovery are being answered.”

And Patrica Bin Murray's, Barbara Boxer's, Debbie Stabenow's, Bob Casey, Jr's and a host of others.

I'm very happy with his progress and I hope he fully recovers. That said, he is currently not competent to be a US Senator, and he should be replaced so that the state of South Dakota has full representation in the Senate, even if it was by special election.

Good luck on his recovery.

He may get so far along as to wake up to the ugliness that normally constitues the dhimmicratic party, and move to the right!

Dr. Seuss?
We're talking about a man who's suppose to be in charge of national affairs here, not just a grocery boy who'll be back to packing bags before the end of the year.
How long is America suppose to wait for him to relearn everything? 5 years? 10?
My son could read cards in kindergarten. He was 5 years old.

It's good he's getting better, but isn't it time to replace him with someone who would at least show up for work once in a awhile?

What is the limit? He was stricken less than 2 months ago, when does he get removed? He's in rehab and making progress but you say he is not currently competent. What if he is competent in three or four months? What then? You would have him removed him from an office he was elected to and is capable of doing, and in the process overturned an election. What part of the Constitution justifies that?

This isn't just a accidental event. It's a genetic defect in his brain. He will have more spells if he goes back to Washington - especially with the rabid left trying to lose the war. There's a lot of pressure not to make it obvious. I don't think his health could take it.
I think he and his family are aware of this. He won't be back. In the mean time, the left will continue to deceive in order to keep their power.

Unfortunately, you are probably right .. he will have another episode. It's fairly common that a person has one stroke followed by another.

Leaving politics aside for now, I am happy for him and his family and give lots of credit to his medical team, in addition to the prayers sent for him.

GW Hospital has become really top notch in the past decade or two. (the major donations of Reagan and Cheney probably didn't hurt in that regard, but they will never get any credit for that anyway).

I've not heard any medical person say that the problem can't be corrected or managed, or that he will definitely have more strokes.

The democrats. They'd go as far as propping him up with a board if they thought they could pull it off.
I think the people in his district will start questioning. It depends on how far to the left his district is. If it's moderate, it won't be long. They'll give him a chance, but I think he'll choose not to come back himself. He'd be risking his life if he did.
He won't "technically" retire unless he thinks the left is safe and will retain their power. Otherwise, he'll milk it for all it's worth.

He has already exceeed my predictions, but those were based on almost no real info in the case. It remains to be seen whether the lesion was removed so a rebleed might still occur as others above have alluded to. It also remains to be seen just what his cognitive recovery will be as others have stated. At what point does the governor step in and say it is over? The fact he has any speech capabilities at this point really is evidence of the skill of the surgeon that helped him. It would be interesting to see the MRI and angio and see just how difficult the procedure must have been.

You won't either. The press isn't allowed near him. It's like a Terry Schiavo rerun!
You'll know only what the left wants you to know. There isn't even any proof he's alive if you really want to think about it.

The governor has no say in his staying or leaving; only Johnson himself has. So long as he has a breath in him, he is entitled to hold office, ability to perform or cognitive abilities notwithstanding. IF he chooses to resign (and you should live so long!) the governor appoints his successor. Absent a resignation (or death which seems now unlikely), the fine people of South Dakota can decide in '08 if they want him to continue to hold the seat.

Amen, and blessings galore to his surgeon and medical team! I've seen the results of their work before and it's incredible.

His district is the state of South Dakota. And the people there will have a chance to express their opinions in the 2008 election. But unless he retires or dies not before then.

That's it!

If he can obey Reid's commands, he's ready for work. /sarc.

I think that what they mean is that it's a miracle that he is even consious. I doubt that he can ever return to the rigors of the senate.
