Boy turns in mom over drugs (IN)
Indianapolis Star ^ | 2/1/07

Columbus - Police say a ten-year-old boy turned in his own mother for using drugs.

Tina Gilley's son called police to say he thought his mother was using drugs. When officers arrived the boy led them to his mother's bedroom. She and a friend had locked themselves in the room. Police arrested Gilley after finding drug paraphernalia.

Columbus police officers say they are extremely proud of the boy because he took a step to help his mother out with her drug problem.

The ten-year-old was the oldest of three children living in the home. They're all in the care of a relative now.

Gilley faces charges of child neglect and cocaine possession among

Brave? yes, I cannot not imagine what this child has been through, prior to him calling the police.

Prayers for the abused and neglected.

More information would be nice, but it seems as though the boy did the right thing (she locked herself in a room).

We don't know that yet. If she ends getting off dope and turning her life around, she may one day be extremely thankful of her child. No guarantees, but far more likely than if she had continued the rest of her life as a doper and poor parent.

Nonsense. I'm pretty much libertarian and despite the theoretical implications (Hillary would like children to turn in their parents for thinking conservative thoughts) I think the kid did the right thing and the only thing he could do under the circumstances.

Somehow I doubt he did it for her, especially considering the type of "help" she is getting. He probably did it to protect his siblings.

Libertarians would agree with the kid actually.

Adults have no business doing drugs in front of kids, especially their own.

It was at a hearing to terminate parental rights, and the kid was telling the judge why she wanted to be adopted by her foster family.

The kid knew, heartbreaking, she knew.

If I didn't know better, I'd say the posters here and here seem to have less regard for small-government conservatives than for the woman who was actually using drugs in front of her three minor children.

I wonder who they think this woman voted for?

I guess that makes the case that if people can actually say something like that and think it's coherent without heroin, just think how bad it would be with it.

Anarchism is as far from libertarianism as conservatism is from communism. Libertarianism is at least close, if not indistinguishable from, small-government conservatism. Unfortunately, many of those who would call themselves "libertarians" are really liberals who are embarassed about it - see Bill Maher. And many of those who would call themselves "conservatives" are really big-government liberals who are embarassed about it - see any number of RINOs and their supporters.

My four kids (siblings I recently adopted through foster care) would tell you that their birth mommy loved their birth dad more than she loved them, since they know she chose him over all four of them. The system made huge (too many, in my book) attempts to help the mother get the kids back, but she would not leave her husband (bio parents of all four) despite knowing he was abusing all of them in various ways. Both of them lived in total squalor and filth, despite working full time jobs. No drugs -- weekend drinking -- vile neglect and abuse, holding the children captive -- until God intervened, and now, through a total miracle, I have all four of them together, despite being a single never married no birth kids of my own mother to them.

My kids would have never picked up the phone or told anyone how bad things were at home. Way too much violence and power -- watching police handcuff dad and just bring him home the next morning. No escape...until God stepped in for the ultimate and final rescue..

God bless this little boy. Who cares what his motives were? Of course he was protecting himself AND his siblings!! He still lives his momma -- no matter how worthless she is.

""If she ends getting off dope and turning her life around, she may one day be extremely thankful of her child. No guarantees, but far more likely than if she had continued the rest of her life as a doper and poor parent.""

What is most likely is she will go to NA meetings and get the kids back in three weeks after she makes three meetings in a row. She will probably continue to draw welfare of some type which she will promptly spend on dope. She will probably be hostile to the kid because he snitched.

There is no guarantees what happens here and I hope your scenario comes to fruition but I saw this enough to be a pessimist. There are few drug addicts who kick dope habits without moving to get away from their dope friends and pushers.

It's amusing how afraid of Libertarians some of you are that you have to resort to name calling and posting fake pictures.

No, we are to assume that she didn't have drugs on her. The charge for drugs I'm sure would be much greater than just having a bong or pipe laying around.

My point is, this is a good wake up call for this woman and she needs to get help. Throwing her in jail for 10 years isn't what needs to be done.

Blatant violation of the Fourth Amendment. This was a warrantless search. A ten year old is legally incapable of giving consent to search his mother's residence.

Often the case in drug arrests. At the time of arrest the officers can't prove that the stuff in the shoebox under the bed wasn't cornstarch and oregano. Further charges are usually forthcoming once tests are completed.

It's hard to get upset on the facts of this instance but what will we think when children of the future are encouraged and rewarded for snitching out parents who own guns? Parents who smoke in the car? The first step on most slippery slopes is generally very reasonable.
