Good questions WCG. They really couldn't be any more vague. I guess they figure if they say something without saying anything they've covered their collective rear ends while not alarming the sheeple.

You're welcome Myrddin. I've been following the anti-gun nutballs and it is depressing but not surprising. And then, to top it off, we get Zumbo deciding to speak without thinking first; and, of course, Rudy to worry about. *sigh*

Post 9/11, Islam flourishes among blacks in America
26 Feb, 2007

ATLANTA: Islam is growing fast among African Americans, who are undeterred by increased scrutiny of Muslims in the United States since the September 11 attacks, according to imams and experts. Converts within the black community say they are attracted to the disciplines of prayer, the emphasis within Islam on submission to God and the religion's affinity with people who are oppressed.

Some blacks are also suspicious of US government warnings about the emergence of new enemies since the 2001 attacks because of memories of how the establishment demonized civil rights leaders Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. As a result, they are willing to view Islam as a legitimate alternative to Christianity, the majority religion among US blacks. "It is one of the fastest-growing religions in America," said Lawrence Mamiya, professor of religion at Vassar College, speaking of Islam among black Americans.

Black Americans typically attend mosques separate from Muslims from immigrant backgrounds despite sharing common beliefs, according to Aminah McCloud, religious studies professor at DePaul University in Chicago. But imams in Atlanta, a US centre for black Muslims, said they were subjected to less scrutiny than Muslims from the Middle East and Indian sub-continent.

Police arrest Israelis suspected of doing business with Hamas and Islamic Jihad
February 25, 2007

JERUSALEM – Police said Sunday they had arrested Israeli staff at two Tel Aviv companies, suspected of helping channel funds to the Hamas and Islamic Jihad Palestinian militant groups. Authorities raided offices of Shintrako Ltd. and Mayan Customs Brokers and International Forwarding Sunday in the Tel Aviv suburb of Ramat Gan, the police said in a statement. Police arrested the general manager of Shintrako and other workers of the two companies, the statement said.

Mayan accountant Tzvika Koren denied that anyone from the company was arrested and said police had only questioned several employees, including himself. The company was not involved in any illegal activity, since it only relayed Shintrako imports through customs, Koren said. Shintrako did not immediately return a call requesting comment.

The companies are suspected of funding Hamas and Islamic Jihad through a company they did business with in the Gaza Strip, the statement said. Shintrako had been warned not to work with the company but found ways to help it get around trade restrictions imposed by Israel, the release said. Police report an increase during the past year in the flow of clandestine finance to Palestinian militant groups squeezed by a financial blockade imposed by international aid donors since Hamas last year won parliamentary elections and control of the Palestinian government.

“These funds are used as fuel to ignite terror and they allow these organizations to preserve and expand their organized infrastructure,” the police statement said.

Arrested Muslim Leader: No Islam Fundamentalism in Bulgaria
25 February 2007, Sunday

There is no Islam fundamentalism in Bulgaria, the former Sofia mufti Ali Hayredin claimed at a press conference on Sunday. The conference on Islam and fundamentalism was triggered by Hayderin's arres earlier in the week on accusation he was the leader of a group that incited to radical Islamism and changes in the Bulgarian constitution.

Hayredin claimed the web page, islam-bg.net, for which he works does in no way incite to radical Islamism and jihad. If there is such site on the Internet, it is now developed, updated and owned by the Muslim Brothers Union, whose chairman is Hayredin, he himself added. "If I was such a dangerous criminal, do you think the court would have arrested me for just 72 hours and let me go on a BGN 100 bail," he asked rhetorically. As a conclusion of the conference, Hayderin said he will seek his right in the court.

Judge dismisses lawsuit over mosque site
Sunday, February 25, 2007

BOSTON -- A Suffolk Superior Court judge has dismissed a lawsuit that claimed it was unconstitutional for the city of Boston to sell land at a discount price to developers of an Islamic center.

The Islamic Society of Boston is building a 70,000-square-foot mosque --the largest in New England -- on a Roxbury parcel it bought from the city in May 2003. Judge Sandra Hamlin dismissed Boston resident James Policastro’s suit, which argued that the Boston Redevelopment Authority violated the constitutional separation of church and state by giving the Islamic Society a below-market deal.

The judge ruled that Policastro had no legal standing because he did not file his suit within 30 days of the land sale. He filed suit in September 2004. ”Policastro’s challenge must fail, as it is time-barred by statute,” Hamlin said. ”He has no other legal standing to challenge the sale.”

The Islamic Society paid $175,000 for the 45,000-square-foot parcel that was assessed at $401,000. The group agreed to easily achievable public benefits _ including maintaining a park, and giving lectures at Roxbury Community College _ as part of the sale.

article snippet:
"The area in which Hezbollah is consolidating lies at the confluence of several Shia, Christian and Druze villages, hamlets and farms. For the past year, Ali Tajiddine, a Shia businessman who traded in diamonds in West Africa before expanding into property development, has been buying swaths of land from Christians and Druze. Two thirds of Sraireh, a Druze village, has been bought along with more than 2 million square yards of land in the near-by Christian hamlet of Qotrani, where 30 houses under construction have been sold to Shia owners, according to residents. A new community of houses and shops called Ahmadiyeh is being built on a barren hillside beside a quarry owned by Mr Tajiddine. His interest in the remote mountainous corner of Lebanon has puzzled residents and raised the suspicions of Mr Jumblatt, whose Druze fiefdom cuts into the area. He suspects that Iranian funds are being used to buy the land, which will be turned into a Hezbollah military zone. Mr Tajiddine’s connections to Hezbollah are well known in south Lebanon. In May 2003, one of his relatives was arrested in Antwerp on charges of laundering money for Hezbollah, using West African diamonds."

Forces Kill, Capture Terrorists During Operations in Iraq

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25, 2007 – Over the past three days in Iraq, U.S. and Iraqi forces killed terrorists, captured suspects, confiscated weapons and responded to bombings.
In Mosul, Coalition Forces killed two terrorists and captured a suspected senior al-Qaida leader during a raid today. While approaching the first targeted building, Coalition Forces began receiving enemy fire from an adjacent building. Coalition Forces fired back, killing one terrorist.

Upon entering the adjacent building, ground forces were confronted by an armed terrorist who began maneuvering on the ground forces. Ground forces took proper self-defense measures and killed the armed terrorist. During the raid, Coalition Forces detained six suspected terrorists, including the targeted individual who is believed to be a senior al-Qaeda in Iraq leader operating a terrorist cell in Mosul.

In other operations throughout Iraq, coalition forces detained 12 suspected terrorists during raids Saturday morning targeting foreign fighter facilitators and the al-Qaeda in Iraq network.

In Fallujah, Coalition Forces detained three suspected terrorists with alleged ties to a foreign fighter facilitation cell. Intelligence reports indicated the suspected terrorists were associated with senior-level foreign fighter facilitators in the local area.

In Mosul, Coalition Forces captured the suspected leader of an al-Qaeda in Iraq cell. The al-Qaeda cell in Mosul reportedly facilitates financial transactions in Iraq and neighboring countries. Four others were detained during the raid.

Another raid in Mosul netted a suspected terrorist with financial ties to al-Qaeda in Iraq. During the raid Coalition Forces discovered a large amount of Egyptian and Syrian money and false passports and identification cards.

North of Amiriyah, three suspected terrorists were detained including the alleged leader of a local vehicle-borne improvised explosive device cell.

"Successful Coalition operations continue to disrupt al-Qaida in Iraq operations, restrict the flow of foreign fighters and reduce the terrorist organization's ability to finance terrorist operations," said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Iraqi civilian and coalition medical personnel responded to a suicide car bomb attack yesterday in Habbaniyah 65 km west of Baghdad.

There are no reports of U.S. casualties, though there were civilian dead and wounded. Coalition forces arrived shortly after the blast to provide security and began helping local citizens transport the injured to nearby medical facilities. The most life threatening injuries were evacuated to Coalition Force medical facilities.

In a separate operation yesterday, Special Iraqi Army forces detained five suspected rogue Jaysh Al-Mahdi militiamen during operations with Coalition in Husayniyah, east of Taji.

The suspects are believed to be part of a rogue JAM network responsible for kidnapping, murders and improvised explosive device attacks against Iraqi civilians and Iraqi Security Forces.
The suspects are implicated in several IED attacks against Coalition Forces in northern Baghdad and Taji.

In another operation near the village of Tall Abtah, outside of Tall Afar, members of the Iraqi Ninewa Special Weapons and Tactics Team yesterday detained a suspected member of a foreign fighter smuggling network during air assault operations with Coalition advisors.

The suspect is believed to be part of a network facilitating the movement of foreign fighters, arms and money into Iraq that support insurgent attacks targeting Iraqi civilians and Iraqi Security Forces.

Meanwhile, Iraqi national police killed at least two terrorists during a coordinated attack on a national police checkpoint along an Iraqi highway two miles south of the Baghdad International Airport at noon yesterday. Eight national policemen were killed in the defense of the checkpoint.

Witnesses described the attack as two vehicles driving from the east towards the checkpoint at a high rate of speed. Eight to ten gunmen exited the lead vehicle, firing assault rifles and throwing hand grenades at the policemen. A firefight ensued, and the second vehicle was forced into a ditch, where it was cordoned off as a possible vehicle-borne improvised explosive device.

Elements of a military transition team of the 10th Mountain Division’s 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, responded to the sound of the attack, attempting to intervene. Upon receiving gunfire from the attackers, the Soldiers called in aviation support.

After securing the area, 1-89 rendered medical aid to the two wounded national policemen and evacuated them to a nearby combat support hospital. The MiTT members identified two dead attackers. An explosive ordnance disposal team was alerted to render the possible VBIED harmless.

Also yesterday, troops found a weapons cache near the village of Koresh during a security operation. Soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division’s 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, found a weapons stockpile consisting of two rocket-propelled grenade warheads, a star-cluster flare, 600 rounds of linked 7.62mm ammunition, an assault rifle, two machine guns, a machine-gun barrel and two bipods for rifles.

The Soldiers detained the owner of the property where the cache was discovered for questioning. An explosive ordnance disposal team was called in and conducted a controlled detonation to destroy the weapons and munitions.

In a separate incident in Ramadi on Feb. 23, Iraqi Police encountered an improvised explosive device with detonation wires leading into a mosque compound and while cordoning off the area around the roadside bomb, discovered a school nearby being used as a terrorist training facility in Ramadi early Feb. 23.

U.S. Soldiers and Iraqi Police were on a route clearing mission in southern Ramadi when an IED was spotted. Coalition forces established a security perimeter while Iraqi police entered the mosque compound.
Despite the fact that Friday is the traditional day of worship in Islam, Iraqi Police officers found the mosque and the surrounding compound deserted. The IED was disabled and nothing else was discovered in the compound.

Meanwhile, a local Iraqi citizen approached Coalition Forces establishing the outer security cordon around the compound and informed them the school across the street was being used as a terrorist training facility.

A search of the abandoned school revealed an indoor rifle range and signs of recent use. Spent rounds, silhouette targets and a coalition force Kevlar helmet with multiple rounds through it were discovered in the abandoned school. Classrooms in the school appear to have also been used for planning and training others to carry out attacks on Iraqi Security and Coalition Forces.

(Compiled from Multinational Force Iraq and Multinational Corps Iraq news releases.)
