MACON, Ga. - Macon Mayor Jack Ellis has converted to Islam and is now working to legally change his name to Hakim Mansour Ellis.
Ellis, who was raised Christian, said Thursday that he became a Sunni Muslim during a December ceremony in the west African nation of Senegal.
Ellis said he has been studying the Quran for years and that his new religion was originally practiced by his ancestors before they were brought to North America as slaves.
"Why does one become a Christian?" Ellis said. "You do it because it feels right. It's the right thing for you to do. ... To me it's no big deal. But people like to know what you believe in. And this is what I believe in."
At the request of his two of his daughters, Ellis said he will keep his last name the same.
Ellis has not ruled out future runs for elected office after his term expires this year. But he said he had not made any calculations for how his religious conversion might affect him politically. He said he is an American first and is proud to live in a country founded on religious freedom.
Muslims should not be painted with a broad brush simply because of a few radicals, he said.
"If anybody wants to know about Islam, I can hold an intelligent conversation," Ellis said. "What I've found is how little we know about the religion."
I imagine this might put a crimp in his re-election bid.

I didn't know that the various tribes in Africa, 250 years ago, were Muslim. If that it so, then fellow muslims sold his ancestors to the white slavers.
Historically, don't we know where most of the slaves came from in Africa? Were they truly muslims?
What an idiot. His ancestors were slaves captured by muslims, then sold and brought to America. I'm sure they were ever so happy to convert to Islam, the cult of their captors, as they were beaten and broken so they could be sold for a better price as a "tame" domesticated slave.

We do know that most of the slave trade was run by Muslims, they used to raid European towns on the coasts, so, it is no small train of thought to see that they raided villages on the west coast of Africa, too.
Well, his religion is his business, he can do what he wants if he's willing to accept the consequences.

I don't know. You don't dis Christianity by describing abandoning it as no big deal. That's not going to sit well with a large part of his religious constituency.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see other prominent blacks convert to Islam. I think they are seeing it as an advantage rather than a liability. While the "black church" was a political force for awhile, now that it has morphed into a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dem party there's really not much need for it as church anymore. In addition, things that start on the bottom in the black community, such as rap (or prison conversions to Islam), always seem to be considered "authentically black" and then become the fashion to be followed by all blacks. This, of course, is except for the hardy souls who are independent thinkers and not Dems, and are naturally hated by other "officially black" blacks and regarded as traitors.
That said, I have never been able to understand how any black person could convert to a religion which, quite frankly, regards them as fundamentally inferior and was responsible not only for selling them into slavery, but for the particular cruelty of chattel slavery.
Slavery was diminishing in the West and in any case was often more of a form of long-term indentured servitude than chattel slavery. In Spanish colonies, for example, slaves, including African slaves, had the right to marry, receive religious instruction and be baptized, could only be sold with their families, and had the right to buy their freedom or be freed by their owners. However, European slavers who dealt with the Arab slave traders after Africa was opened up treated the African slaves exactly as the Muslims did: as pieces of property with no human rights whatsoever. Remember, in Islam, the people at the top are Arabs, for the simple reason that Mohammed was an Arab and Islam is still a "family run cult," with descendants of Mohammed being the big cheeses.
As I say, I'm mystified, but I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be the first of many conversions of black politicos to Islam.
