Have no idea. Has generated outrage in the local "bloggers" who have responded to this story but have heard nothing more from WRAL except that the attacker has mental problems.

How is a sincere criminal, trying hard, going to get ahead in his profession if his victim fails to cooperate?
Almost all crime depends on the cooperation of the victim. If the victim refuses his assigned role, the criminal is placed at a disadvantage, one so severe that it usually takes an understanding and compassionate judge to set right.

Yep - the people of Coats should storm the house of whatever Judge let him out. And if he hurts another person - they should lock up this judge and throw away the key.

I just want to know who the judge is.

From the victim's aunt who posted at the WRAL story:

The victim in this brutal attack is my Aunt. I'm not exactly sure why this man received a bond. He was treated at the hospital at the same time my Aunt was being treated. He was allowed to just walk out of the the hospital with his wife after being treated. The AUTHORITIES were not even going to charge him until they found out about the attempted rape. And do it just to "Keep the communities trust?" Not charge someone with breaking into a home and brutally beating an elderly lady? Mental problems?? I don't think so. He knew what he was doing. I guess if I broke into an old lady's home at 5 or 6 in the morning planning to beat and rape her because I KNEW she lived alone and had been watching her, I would say I was crazy too. I tell you what, he picked the wrong Grandma to mess with. He won't expecting her to fight back like that. Guess he didn't watch her long enough to realize that she is a "TOUGH OLD LADY"!

"Why? " Because you live in a PC nation where everyone is equal but some are more equal than others. Our Judicial system seems to think that because we view everyone innocent until proven guilty, it isn't PC to jail them before that happens. We no longer put much emphasis on the right to life, pre born or post born. The only life that means much is "my" life. How can anything else have meaning with an outlook like this.

I'm happy that the elderly woman was able to fight off the attacker but her chance of getting justice is slim. He has more rights than she does.

What's so bad is that "people" assume that our justice system is supposed to "protect society" from obvious threats to its citizenry when something like this happens and the perpetrator is so obviously guilty - caught in the act of attack.

We have lost the sense of reason and just plain good common sense that most people just assume are still in place.

Can you imagine the struggle this guy will have to survive in prison:

1. Attempted rape (frowned upon in the general social circles of penal life). His cellmate Bubba will think about his grandmother, sister, and wife every time he sees this woos.

2. Lost a struggle with a 75 year old.

Life will be hard for Mr. Meeks in the years ahead.
