Candidate Edwards: raise taxes for healthcare

Democratic U.S. presidential candidate John Edwards on Sunday said that he would raise taxes, chiefly on the wealthy, to pay for expanded healthcare coverage under a plan costing $90 billion to $120 billion a year to be unveiled on Monday.

"We'll have to raise taxes. The only way you can pay for a healthcare plan that cost anywhere from $90 to $120 billion is there has to be a revenue source," Edwards said on NBC's Meet the Press news program.

The 2004 vice presidential nominee and former North Carolina senator said his plan would "get rid of George Bush's tax cuts for people who make over $200,000 a year."

He said the plan would also reduce healthcare costs.

"Finally we need to do a much better job of collecting the taxes that are already owed," he said, specifically targeting what he said are large amounts of unpaid capital gains taxes.

"We should have brokerage houses report the capital gains that people are incurring because we're losing billions and billions of dollars in tax revenue," Edwards said.

Offering a preview of his plan, Edwards said it aims to bring healthcare coverage to 47 million uninsured Americans, lower costs for the middle class and foster competition.

It would expand Medicaid, the state-federal health insurance plan for the needy, and offer subsidies for the uninsured. He said, "We ask employers to play a bigger role, which means they either have to have coverage or they have to buy into what we're calling health markets."

I think he should turn his new home into a hospital for the poor. And wait until he tries to get malpractice insurance.

Here's an idea to end taxes: your paycheck is direct deposited to the government who might give you an allowance according to your needs if you are a good boy.

Let's see, a trial lawyer who's ambulance chasing has led to higher insurance premiums for doctors which has led to higher healthcare costs for all.

Vicious circle. Stop this rat from chasing his tail.

Edwards is a vile piece of crooked protoplasm posing as a defender of the people. Crooked lawyers like Edwards are the biggest reason that healthcare costs having risen so dramatically. Edwards has made a fortune on baseless claims of malpractice being the cause of cerebral palsy.

I had an interesting conversation with a French Canadian whose wife is a surgeon. He is very unhappy with their health care system. The first is the one door philosphy and the waiting that is associated with it. The other is the fact that his wife is treated as underappreciated hired help.

I asked him what he thought would be the best thing for the U.S. health care system. He said tort reform. Remember this is coming from the most liberal part of Canada (Quebec).

What kind of system do you have when you raise taxes from 50% to 100% of people's income? It starts with "S" and it has failed in every country that's tried it. And are we already halfway there with our current half-S system?

He did his homework. Most of the idiots in this country feel that health care is a right. Most that don't have health care smoke, drink and/or do drugs incessantly, for no other reason that they're losers. Creating more of a need for this wonderful "plan".

Seems to be me that it won't be long and they will run out of "rich" to tax. Every proposal goes after the rich which I ask what or who is rich?

to pay for expanded healthcare coverage under a plan costing $90 billion to $120 billion a year to be unveiled on Monday.

Ah, Medicare, the super-sequel. LBJ told us Medicare would top out at a mere pittance of $400 billion. Today, not including the prescription coverage that Bush loaded us with, it is over $1 trillion.

The Breck girl is as vacuous and empty a suit as is Barack Hussein Obama.
