Thanks Dolly!

My Father-in-law Frank C. (age 87) was in the battle of the bulge, (artillery), under General Patton. He had the nickname, "Mister Clean", for he would frequently wash his laundry.

Thank You so much for this post.

My father fought in WWII. He was in Germany and France. His father served in Germany during WWI. I went to Germany during the Vietnam War and my son is now at Ramstein Germany.
My dad is now 83 and he really wants to see the memorial.

Your post just made me realize I'd better suck it up and foot the bill for him to get from the west coast to DC. Next year may be too late...

Spiritual Passion

READ: Revelation 2:1-7

I have this against you, that you have left your first love. —Revelation 2:4

Why does spiritual passion fade so easily? When we first experience God’s love, we spend hours thinking about Him, studying His Word, and telling others how much He means to us. Then it happens. Our busy schedules slowly dampen our passion. Our longing for Jesus and our study of His character become an occasional glance. Surely the object of our affection hasn’t changed!

The church at Ephesus wrestled with maintaining its spiritual passion. Jesus, through John, wanted to help them restore and maintain their love and zeal for Him. Although He commended this church for their work, Jesus saw that they had abandoned their first love—Him (Rev. 2:4).

The Ephesians had lost their spiritual passion for Jesus. It had become a cold and mechanical orthodoxy. I wonder if they had allowed the stealthy culprit of religion and busyness to enter their hearts. Whatever it was, something had stolen the affection they had once reserved for the Lord.

Have you allowed something to steal your passion? If so, it can be restored and maintained when you consistently remember His amazing love demonstrated at Calvary. Repent of your sinful, unloving attitudes, and out of love for Jesus repeat your "first works" (v.5).

What once was filled with wonder
Lies cold within my heart;
Return, O Lord, that wonder,
And may it not depart. —Sper

Devotion to Jesus is the key to spiritual passion.

This is an awesome WWII post Dolly. Thank you for your service Wheelbarrow.

My father served in the Naval Air Force, and father in law served in the Navy during WWII. My husbands uncle was also in the Navy and was killed aboard the USS Gilligan, burned alive at his gun after a Kamikaze pilot crashed into the ship.

My FIL is still living but is blind and has Alzheimer's, he's 79 and he told a story about his age when he entered the service at age 16. Said he was at sea in the Pacific for 18 months straight one time, they went into ports for supplies but never left the ship. He also spent some time on the Atlantic ocean and said the Atlantic ocean is much rougher than the Pacific.

I found it on David Austin's roses. I think I will order it for this spring. St. Cecilia is the patron saint of music and musicians :)

Speaking of roses, here's a favorite, I have from my other garden to plant here. I love this rose. It's perfect for this thread. World War II Memorial Rose

Maybe we've already had the icy weather. When we were starting on our trip to see Piper last Friday, it was snowing and there was snow on the ground for the first 200 miles of the trip. The roads, however, were fine.

I am certainly enjoying the warmth! I couldn't believe the difference in temps from OK down to here.

Thank you Aqua and thanks for the info on your family. Do you have a pix of your dad & maybe do a little write up about him? I am hoping FReepers will feel excited about being able to share about their special WW2 people with stories & pix.

I wish I knew more about my dad's WW2 experiences. Like many men of the era, they didn't relish talking about the actual battle/war related stories..

Gratefully some have & we do have good records,

I am going to put together a tribute to my dad w/ pix hopefully sometime today or tomorrow for this thread & for "the record".

An aside, we share an interest in jewels, cabs, geodes etc.. and we all know that "diamonds are a girl's best friend".. Did you see the movie Blood Diamond? VERY graphic movie/violence but a story that needs to be out there.

My friend Mark used to invest heavily in diamonds before he was aware of the situation in early 90s.. He saw the movie on my recommendation & said also it made a powerful impression on him

Yes, I guess, one could say it is an "agenda" movie, but to a degree they all are.

Nice to see those roses GeeBee..I can imagine them despite the fact we are buried in snow & temps are around zero(forget how low the wind chill is) I especially like the one with the "old world/Old Rose" look. I had a large rose collection in NC........was active with American & Winston Salem Rose Society. Had some of the old ones, that had a very sweet fragrance for the most part.

Hi Dolly
That is so neat. You are a rosarian :) I love the fragrances too. I get a lot of the HT's and many of them are not as fragrant as the older roses. In my new garden I should look for the older ones as well. Nothing like the scent of a rose. :) I try to pick the ones that have good names. There will be no Streisand, odonell etc roses in my garden LOL ;) Our Lady of Guadalupe is another I love.

70 degrees... ah that is like a wonderful dream... Here in ohio we get excited when it finally gets to high 30s.. it seems balmy in compaison. 50 degree is T-shirt & shorts weather & "lets work in the yard" mentality.

But I recall my years of living in Texas,Florida & NC.. you do get spoiled very easily

I am so OUT OF knowing the new/in roses. It was over 15 years since I lived in NC. I miss the orchids more than I missed the roses however. My ex was the orchid person but I loved them & shared his enthusiasm, if NOT the heavy duty amount of work involved in their culture/breeding

I really need to see who I missed that served in WWII. I'll check and let you know. Very interesting and I can't believe I have not asked them sooner.

Hi Beachy, cute table.. and I LOVE GREEN..

I love the Memorial. I have been there three times, the most recent(and where the pix I posted came from) was this past December.

The first time I was there was shortly after the dedication ceremony, It was hot & the fountain was loaded with children, adults & pets, cooling off & laughing & enjoying each other & the day. *the one pix I have on this thread of the vet in wheelchair is from that first visit, He had tears in his eyes recounting the war & was so thrilled to be threre,)

I could not help but sit on the edge of the pool & take it all in.. here were the symbols all around the circular display of the battles, people & events that let us here many years later live in the security & protection that they provided in that war.

It was as if they were looking over & approving.

I had my pup Oliver who also had a ball & like the other pets there cooled off in the pool.

The times of varing sun locations makes for interesting effects.

I have never been there at night yet.

I love the FDR memorial at night and am guessing that this memorial is also awesome with the spotlights & water sprays & falls around the display
