Pacers involved in nightclub scuffle (Round 2)
WTHR eyewitness news ^ | 1/7/07 | Steve Jefferson and Rich Van Wyk

Posted on 02/07/2007 9:12:18 AM PST by Kimmers

Indianapolis - Metro police are investigating a bar fight involving two members of the Indiana Pacers at a west side nightclub.

According to police reports, Jamaal Tinsley and Marquis Daniels allegedly punched a manager of the Eight Second Saloon early Tuesday morning. Police say Pacers guard Keith McLeod was inside the Tremors nightclub but was not involved.

Police say the fight started between a manager and an individual suspected of stealing coats from a coat check area. According to police reports, Tinsley and Daniels punched the manager and Daniels threatened to kill him.

The bar manager appears to have suffered a broken jaw and a severed ear lobe, according to police reports. Police say Tinsley may have suffered a cut to the forehead. A cousin of Pacers guard Keith McLeod lost a tooth.

Six off-duty police officers were working in security in the parking lot at the time of the fight. By the time they got inside the bar, Tinsley and Daniels were gone.

No charges have been filed and no players were arrested. Detectives are working the case.

Indiana Pacers CEO and President Donnie Walsh issued the following statement: "We are aware of reports of an incident Monday night after the Golden State game allegedly involving members of the Indiana Pacers. At this time, the incident is under police investigation and until the investigation is completed, we have no further comment."

The Pacers have a home game tonight against Seattle. The team were scheduled to hold a shoot-around at Conseco Fieldhouse at 10:45.

I cannot help but compare our two professional teams. The class act of the Colts organization and the thug behavior of members of the Pacers.

Are we seeing this kind of behavior throughout the NBA or is this a problem with the Pacers?

It's the Pacers. They're giving the NBA a bad name all by themselves.

Indiana is bad but I believe the gangsta attitude permeates all through the League. There was a very bad incident in Detroit several years ago where the players went into the stands and attacked fans. I believe, the Pacers were involved with that, too.

It seem pretty rampant in the NBA, although the Spurs and maybe a couple of other teams do seem to have good citizen persona.

I suspect the arrest rate for the NFL is much higher than that of the NBA. I blame the NBA for their efforts to ruin the college basketball and the declining quality of the product on the court, but I think the gangster level is rather overemphasized compared to the other big pro sports.

The Pacers are what the Portland Trailblazers were a few years back.

I agree: the Pacers seem to be the Cincy Bengals or Oakland Raiders of the NBA, and they need to start evaluating people for class and character as well as ball skillz!

I thought it was a strip club but it appears to be a regular night club.

Instead of thanking God for the chance to make so much money and have such a wonderful life they think they are entitled to it because they have quick reflexes and can shoot a ball through a hoop.

If my kid has to have a zero tolerance to go to school then what is wrong with having the same thing with these thugs? Sit them down and explain that their checks will be made out at the end of the season, and if they want them they have to earn them, not by how they play but how they represent the team.

Once they figure out that the bling only gets bought if they act like decent human beings then maybe that will make them understand the great life and luck they really have.

Looks to me like the NBA needs to tighten up it's standards. If they won't, the teams need to make a stand and refuse to employ these types of individuals... run them out.
I mean, look at these guys, would you hire them to flip burgers? Hell no, I wouldn't let them past security. They look and act like typical urban thugs. The NBA should crack down on this "gangsta" crap and banish everything from the look and dress to the behavior. Clean up this mess already, it's becoming an even bigger joke day by day.

David Stern needs to go. He has let the league deteriorate from its glory days of the 1980s.

I'm not sure about the arrest rate in the NFL versus NBA, the NFL is a larger organization. I'd like to know the proportionate rate between the two. They are probably closer than you think. Hell, Cincinnati Bangles and Chicago Bears have probation officers traveling with the teams.

I do agree with the statement that the NBA is trying to ruin college roundball.

I think the NBA is higher as a percentage of the league. Remember NBA rosters are only 15 players compared to the NFL's 53, plus there's two more NFL teams (that's the equivalent of 7 NBA teams right there). Move the Bengals troubles to an NBA team and you're talking half the roster, kind of like the Portland Trailblazers a few years ago. Probably the big difference right now is that after the Jailblazers incidents Stern started seriously cracking down on the league, where as Tagliabeau was willing to accept half a dozen guys a year getting in trouble (half a dozen out of 1700 isn't bad really). But this year the Bengals became a serious embarassment to the league and Goodell is making threatening sounds, throw the Bengals out of the mix and the NFL was pretty much on a normal rate.

Pacers are now known as thugs. I used to watch them ,I USED to. They will never win a championship in basketball as the Colts have done in football. I think they need to clear this team out and start over. This bunch is more at home at the Strip Clubs than on the BB court.

"Six off-duty police officers were working in security in the parking lot at the time of the fight."

Sounds like a real family place. Anyone think to work inside the club? I guess the owner couldn't risk a shoot-out inside.

Well, so far Ron Artest has caused no problems in Sacramento, and though it's early in his Warriors career, Stephen Jackson has been behaving himself very well and playing great for Don Nelson.

But it appears the Pacers are still causing trouble. There may be a leadership vacuum in the organization.

What really needs to happen is not going to happen. Where thuggish behavior or violent behavior would get anyone in the work world canned, these guys are held above that standard and are not penalized comparatively. If they cause problems on the court during games, or practice, then they need to be fired, contract forfeited, and never allowed in the NBA again. I here Italy has some leagues they may qualify for.

I agree, it seems when the "troubled" Pacers go on they seem to do better.

I am glad Ron is doing well. I actually like the guy. Whenever his dogs got loose they would gleefully run to my house. They would stay with me for awhile and then I would call the Pacers and then Ron would call me and he would get his dogs back. He was nothing but nice to me.

I agree I think we need new leadership from owners on down and I do not see that happening.

They didn't have these problems back in the old ABA days. I remember flying on an airplane out to Colorado with a new baby. The ABA players were also on that flight. They were so sweet and kind to me. I think it has more to do with the quality of the people playing, and the fact that they are covered for, instead of getting the boot, forever.

I think it has more to do with the NBA than the Simon's. The NBA has allowed HS kids into the league for crying out loud. These kids haven't learned to handle HS yet, and then are thrust into the "big leagues" and given more money than they've ever seen before.

It's like giving your 16 yo kid a bottle of whiskey, a loaded gun, and the keys to the family sedan. Not a good idea.

Local musician Duke Tumatoe used to sing a song: "Lord help our Colts". It finally paid off, now he needs to come up with one for the Pacers.

The NBA needs to go back to drafting college graduates. The kids need to grow up a little more before entering the league. The NBA also needs to set stricter codes of conduct with greater penalties for code violations. That's the only way they're going to clean up their image.

The NBA sucks these days. Give me the days of Bird and Magic over these thugs anytime. Back then they actually had sound fundamentals and now all they do is run around jumping and thumping their chests. Heck, now-a-days a team is lucky to break 100 points in a game. Back then they did it every night. I would think that the NBA scouts and coaches would learn somehting from our teams getting spanked by the europeans lately. What do all teams in europe have in common? Of course I can't say it out loud for obvious reasons.
