USS New York
It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center .
It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.
Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."
Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."
The ship's motto? "Never Forget"

One of these plus one of the new nuclear subs outfitted as a seal covert operating platform would be a threat to be reckoned with..

That 'thing' actually permits a ship to move faster and more smoothly through the water.
It's also probably jammed with sonar gear.

She carries a pair of 30mm guns and a pair of RAM launchers for close-in and air defense. Her real punch is delivering a bunch of Marines onto the bad guys' doorstep.
If you're a bad guy, you really don't want that to happen.

The long probe you see cheats the laws of physics. It fools the water into thinking the ship is longer than it really is, thereby increasing the ship's hull speed, which is always a function of the length of the hull.

What's that .... thing sticking out? Perhaps it's part of the offensive dildonics suite. The generic name for it is a bulbous bow. It's purpose is to modify the flow of water along the hull and reduce drag. Less drag means more speed, longer range, better fuel efficiency.
And no, it's not crammed with sonar. Since the ship has nothing to fire at the sub to begin with it doesn't need sonar
To: r9etb
Is it balls out under flank speed?

I suppose the helos could, but on LPDs flight ops are primarily for troop deployment. Although I've seen Apaches tied to the cloverleafs, when flight ops are in gear the deck was usually taken up by a Chinook (oh, how I was tempted to spell that correctly...).I would expect that if those type of helo ops were to be run the LHD(s) would handle it.
The Amphib group (LHDs, LSDs and LPDs) is supported by CGs, DDGs, FFGs and SSNs. So, as you said Frigates and Destroyers are certainly in the mix.
The Austin class LPDs look very sharp. I wonder what they changed - the Raleigh class could jam in ~1K of jarheads.

Interesting. It looks to have that new type of hull that makes the ship much more stable at high speed.
Dang it all...I wish I could remember the name.

Always thought it would be a great idea to take a Trident boat taken out of service due to SALTs, remove tubes, put in hot bunks for a USMC battalion with some more air generation, some messing areas. You could move them ashore with inflatable rubber boats. A battalion of US Marines arriving unexpectedly in your harbor is a defense planing nightmare.
