Some of my happiest moments of childhood involved Boy Scouts. The BSA helped me become the person I am today. It helped teach me leadership, respect, honor, environmental conservation, patriotism and so many other things.

I still proudly boast that I am an Eagle Scout on my resume some 15 years after earning it.

My son, 18, is an Eagle Scout. I just retired as Scoutmaster after 5 years. We graduated 15 Eagle Scouts, all hardworking young men, in a year and a half.

But most importantly, my son is a member of the Eagle Class of 2004.

A couple of you mentioned that you are just starting out. When my son started in his Cub Scout Pack I started out as Cubmaster, as the previous Cubmaster had quit after being inactive for months and my wife had blabbed that I'd been a Boy Scout. When my son was old enough to become a Boy Scout there was no Troop 69, so we started one. I say this to let you know that you can start from the beginning and still have a great time and do a great job. The kids will forgive your mistakes (and will probably enjoy them!). Keep up your Scout spirit and you'll do fine. Take the training, read the manual, go on the campouts and the activities (hey, build your own Pinewood Derby car!) and have a good time.

If someone's agenda is more about their ego instead of about the kids, they're wrong and you're right.

Get to know your Unit Commissioner. If you don't have or haven't seen your Unit Commissioner, call your District Commissioner and ask him or her what's going on (the Council office will have your DC's number).

If someone wants to know what your Pack's or Den's or Troop's bylaws or discipline policies are, tell them "A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, ...", that all Scouts and Scouters are expected to abide by them, and that each case will be determined on a case by case basis using your best judgement at that time. No legalistic rules that kids or adults can bend. And if they don't trust your judgement and want a bunch of written policies they can game, tell them there's another Pack or Troop a few miles away they are welcome to join.

Hi Ron,

You are the MAN! What a resume in Scouting. I was a Cub Scout Scout from 1964 to 1970 off and on. I started as a Co Den Leader pack 186 in 1994 and an ASM in Troop 473 in 2000. I currently am a Den Leader in Pack 40 and ASM in Troop 472. am a member of the OA 2006, Philmont crew summer 2006. I do not know anyone who does not get a huge load of satisfaction from helping boys go through Scouting. Oh by the way out of my first den in pack 186 4 of my boys will become Eagles by this summer. My son being one of them. Proud dad for sure!
