How do bad ideas spread and enter the general stock of received wisdom? One culprit is sloppy or uncritical newspaper reporting.

Then I think it is fair to say that America's general stock of perceived wisdom is rife with bad ideas.

Illiterate reporting at its best.
"According to the article, new research has found antisocial traits to be inherited rather than acquired (actually such research has been going on for a long time, and the ideas behind it are nothing new). The implication of this research, the newspaper says, is that a bad child would be bad however he or she was brought up."
Unless the heritability of the trait is 100% [which it never is. 70-80% heritability for Spearman's g is at the high end of heritabilities range. Normally they are much lower, and in the formulae they are squared - even 80% becomes 0.64] - so, unless one is claiming 100% trait heritability, there is only a tendency, and never a certainty, of the outcome. Thus, a bad child of the above quotation is likely to turn out bad, no matter the upbringing, but with some luck might escape such a fate [and turn out even worse].

According to the article, new research has found antisocial traits to be inherited rather than acquired...

For, as Goethe once remarked, when disorder reaches beyond a certain point, people begin to long for the man on the white horse—or in this case, in the white coat.

Osama once remarked {paraphrased}...people will go with the Muslim on the strong horse. Strong horse? White robe? Islam has the cure! (or are the bad-moon gene carrying gang part of the problem?) /sarcasm

Words and Deeds bump!
