WEST HARTFORD -- -- The Rev. J. Stan McCauley, head of Hartford Public Access Television, came one step closer Sunday to declaring his candidacy for mayor of Hartford.
McCauley, who until Sunday was deciding whether to wait four years before running, announced during a conservative panel discussion Sunday that he would in fact be running in the November election. McCauley said he plans to file his candidacy papers on Feb. 26.

McCauley, a Republican, had been invited at the last minute to join a panel in West Hartford to discuss how the party might reform itself. The panel included state GOP Chairman Chris Healy.
McCauley urged an audience of nearly 70 conservatives Sunday to reach out to minority residents.
"We are not reaching minorities. And it's not what we stand for, but how the message is presented," he said. "We have to show Hartford that we're offering a viable alternative."

Connecticut ping!
Thanks for the heads up on this one, Dutchy.
Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
Hartford has a better chance of electing a gay, albino Jewish Eskimo mayor.
Hartford hasn't elected a Republican Mayor since Ann Uccello in 1967. The city's demographics (it's plurality Hispanic -- it only was 18% White in 2000, probably less than that now) no longer resemble what the place was in her day, and it's doubtful any Republican could get more than 15-20% of the vote there, if that. You'd have to have a situation that elected Bret Schundler Mayor of Jersey City (a city of somewhat similar demographics, only about 20%+ White, and majority Hispanic & Black combined), and that is highly unlikely.
If Osama Bin Laden ran as a Democrat in Hartford he'd win !
No, he'd have to change his name to Osama Perez to win.
Ann Uccello... Tom Meskill... long ago and so far away.
BTW, the 18% white figure from the 2000 Census includes white Hispanics. Probably not more that 10% of the city's population was comprised of white Anglos.
LOL! Although, sadly... you're probably right.
Wow, I've heard great things about Rev. McCauley. Dutchy was very impressed with him as well. I admit I know very little about him... wish I had been there Sunday to hear him speak. Hopefully there were be more chances...
Tom Meskill was Mayor of New Britain not Hartford. Then 6th District Congressman. Then Governor 1971-75. Then a Second Circuit Court of Appeals judge. Great guy. Great pro-lifer.
And both Mayor Uccello and Judge Meskill are still with us today.
No, no. The figure for Hispanics (either Black or White) is 40%. The White, non-Hispanic figure is just under 18%. I only went to Hartford once (back on my legendary '94 election season New England trip) on a Friday afternoon around the State Capitol grounds. To me, it looked like a fairly "White" place, until I realized all the folks were state workers clearing out to head to their homes in the suburbs. When I walked a few blocks through the downtown streets, it seemed similar to my hometown of Nashville with more Blacks out and about (I didn't notice a heavy Hispanic presence). Of course, that's 12 years ago now, and I don't know how substantial the demographics changed in the '90s. The Hispanic migration, ironically, probably kept Hartford from becoming a mostly Black city of maybe only around 60 or 70,000 people.
