I'd heard that while in custody he'd confessed to the Jon Benet murder and was seeking extradition to the US.

According to official sources, those were the passengers that managed to reduce to the kidnapper.

That sounds like the passengers overpowered the hijacker, and kept him subdued until the plane landed.

Very good!

Coincidentally, I am in the middle of reading my daughter a chapter of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland every night.

"Police in the Canary Islands..."

They're just pining for the fjords, after smoking too much Mauritania.

...it is afraid that some passenger has fallen to the emptiness...

I don't think you can pull a side door open at altitude when pressurized. The old DC-9 rear door could, I think.

Apparently some passengers opened the door after the plane landed and jumped out.

"Interestingly, Western Sahara was the last country that I hadn't heard of"

Well, it's not really a country, since it has been occupied by Morocco since the Spanish left in the 1975 or so (it used to be the Spanish colony of Spanish Sahara).

Plane hijacking ends in Canary Islands

MADRID, Spain - An armed man who hijacked a Mauritanian plane to Spain's Canary Islands Thursday was overpowered by passengers and crew before he was arrested by police who boarded the plane shortly after landing, government and airline officials said.

The man was overwhelmed by passengers and arrested when police stormed the Air Mauritania 737 shortly after the aircraft landed at Gando military base on Gran Canaria island, Spanish Interior Ministry official Carolina Darias said.

...

Mohamed Ould Mohamed Cheikh, Mauritania's top police official, said the hijacker was a Moroccan from Western Sahara who wanted to immigrate to France.

The man had tried many times to obtain a visa at the French embassy in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, where he had lived for a few months, Mohamed said. The hijacker's identity wasn't given.

According to CNN now, two passengers disarmed the Hijacker who was armed with two handguns. Glad to hear that passengers worldwide will take responsibility. Cheers for them.

Like old Red Sovine's tune "Phantom 309", the passengers could say in a Texas drawl, "Mannnn, I sure was glad to hear them AIR BRAKES come on!"
