Gave in to the PC crowd. I don't even want to admit I am an alum.
Bevo can't be far behind from being replaced with a Tofu-poppy-flower-child.
So does that mean the chief was sent to the reservation?
As a USC fan, I hope the Turks never get riled up about negative portrayals of their ancestors.
Yeah, the animal mascots are probably next. Bulldogs, Longhorns, Buffaloes, etc. They'll probably say it's too cruel. The NCAA is the college sports mafia.
Heck, Ron Zook should make you not want to admit that you're an alum.
Is San Diego State still the Aztecs? I don't think there are any Aztecs left in Mexico, but I am sure somebody somewhere must be offended on their behalf.
This is probably the only time you'll ever hear me praise FSU, but at least they will never give in to the PC Police regarding Chief Osceola and their pregame rituals.
Wasn't it Zook's boys that won the big game? :-)
So send a note that as the Chief is retired, so are your alumni donations.
Never said the guy can't recruit, heck he even landed a pretty good class at Illinois this year. But as an in-game coach, he's about the worst I've ever seen.
But hey, they're "getting better and better."
Only 6 years since a BCS game. Too bad we got ran over in NO.
Yes, along with a case of Jack Daniels and some poker chips. Apparently, that's the image of Native Americans that's acceptable to PC crowds.
PC demagoges freak out over Indian mascots, nevermind teams that have devils and murderers (jayhawks, pirates, etc) as themes. What a bunch of crap.

Guess you won't be known as the "Fighting Illini." Maybe you can adopt the nick name of Industrial Strength Pussies as from 1867 to 1885, the University was known as the Illinois Industrial University.
"Loyzem gayne!" Mel Brooks Blazing Saddles
Yet another excuse to end government funding of "higher" education...
The only reason this nonsense happens is because it is paid for with Other People's Money.
The University of North Dakota, while not having a person dress in Indian gear, is suing the NCAA to keep our Fighting Sioux nickname. Since UI is giving in on this you might as well support us. What say ye?
Miles Brand is the biggest piece of Shiite to ever run the NCAA. He has all the weasly, totalitarian liberal traits apparent in Mayor Bloomberg.
Upon his retirement, I would love for Bobby Knight to kick his arse.
Not gonna happen, but one can always dream.
He died in 1988 and was a Yurok Indian from N. California.

Me neither! What a sad, sad day.
HAIL TO THE CHIEF!!!!
You never had Ron Turner as coach (did you see his fantastic offense in the super bowl this year?)
Or Lou Tepper (great guy, lousy big school head coach)..
This saddens me. The bigger picture saddens me more.College sports have been ruined. This serves as only one example of how the NCAA has turned its back on what was good about college athletics. The bowl games are a joke. I did not watch one bowl game. I would have like to have seen the Rose Bowl played on New Year's Day with Big Ten Champ Ohio State playing USC.The Big Ten is a fraud or those boys and girls cannot count as they have eleven teams. The Big Ten had a beautiful basketball system when they only had ten teams and each played each other home and home. The games and the conference season was really special. With that stupid tournament I have lost most of my interest in following Big Ten Basketball. I think it may have 84 that was about as good as it could get for Illinois, they went to the Rose Bowl and won ALL 18 conference games in BB. Those were accomplishments although playing for the National Championship a couple of years was special, too.

RIP, Chief...........:(
The sheer stupidity of this all is that the Chief was loved and respected by students and alumni alike.
So, some liberal idiot from outside the state comes in and assumes that we are offending a tribe of Indians (which incidentally no longer exists) based on his own PC image of reality.
Wow, what a coincidence! This morning I woke up and for some reason decided to wear my University Of Illinois T-shirt to work, something I rarely do and only on Fridays. So here I am wearing the UIUC shirt with the Illiniwek mascot right in the middle, and reading about this !
I guess the name of the university and state need to be changed also since they are based on the dead Indian tribe also. We need to change the names of rivers and lakes around here as well.
they should just say the chief was gay. then he could stay.
The Aztecs were the Baathists of 16th-century Mexico--most of their neighbors hated them with a passion, which is why most of the forces fighting on the Spanish side were native Mexicans. The name "Aztec" isn't accurate--they were called the Mexica.
The problem is the NCAA. We need a dozen top tier athletic schools to form their own organization. I think Notre Dame and UNLV would be a good start for schools. Once the monopoly is broken, the NCAA will have to come to grips with the lost revenue.
It will be a figid day in Hell before they ever see another dollar from this alum.
So what will be the replacement? Giant Douche or Turd Sandwich?
It's considered an honor to be selected to be Chief Illiniwek. I don't know what it's like today but there were about 120 people there when I tried out back in the 70's. Fortunately for the Chief's reputation I wasn't chosen.
Only after the NCAA bans post-season play at any state named after Native Americans.
"... I always thought it was done with class and dignity."
I'm not given to being PC, but being Lenape and Cherokee let me say that there is nothing classy or dignified about a non-Indian playing dress-up and acting as he preceives that Indians did or do. If the logo that I remember that was used for stationary, etc is from UI then I thought that was acceptable, but the mascot was not.
"Yes, along with a case of Jack Daniels and some poker chips. Apparently, that's the image of Native Americans that's acceptable to PC crowds."
Not at all. But having a non-Indian play dress-up and act as he preceives that Indians did or do is unacceptable.
Every student should come to the game dressed in an Indian headress with tomahawks just to piss the administration off.
