The University of Illinois will retire its 81-year-old American Indian mascot, Chief Illiniwek, following the last men's home basketball game of the season on Wednesday. The NCAA in 2005 deemed the buckskin-clad Illiniwek an offensive use of American Indian imagery and barred the university from hosting postseason events. American Indian groups and others complained for years that the mascot, used since 1926, is demeaning. Supporters of the mascot say it honors the contributions of American Indians to Illinois.
Illinois still will be able to use the name Illini because it's short for Illinois and the school can use the term Fighting Illini, because it's considered a reference to the team's competitive spirit, school officials said. It is unclear if the school will get a new mascot.

Of course the school should get a new mascot. They can change from this heroic image...

...to something like this which Stanford adopted when they threw the Indians overboard in the 70s...

Of course, I don't think Stanford ever asked if Lignitic-Americans or Cellulosic-Americans are offended by this new image. I for one am deeply offended that Stanford has shown such insensitivity to these marginalized groups.

Sure is Nice of the PC-Crowd to whittle away at any & all traces of the Native American tribes that many canturies ago roamed & lived over the North Anerican continent.
I'm sure it's highly beneficial to the Sheeple of the US that all the Indians are forgotten about. [uber-heavy, gooey-molasses-grade sarcasm off]

They could adopt a weasel
or an ACLU Lawyer as their new mascot.
Depends on whichever costume would be cheaper.

This PC thing has gone world wide.
I just read that the 'Fighting Jihadi' has been banned as mascot at Tehran U.

My question is...
When will Muslim groups begin to attack team names like Pirates and Buccaneers which reference the Barbary Pirates of the 18th Century.

What about the Minnesota Vikings? Is that not used in a derogatory many towrds Scandinavians?
What about the Fightin' Irish of Norte Dame? This implies that all Irish fight.
What about the Chicago Cubs? This implies that all Cubs are losers? Ooops, think I will get flamed for the latter one ;)
Just kidding.

What's to keep the fans from showing up at the games in Indian costume?

It should be replaced with a Gun Totin' Axe Swingin'[ Pioneer.
But no, that would still offend the indiges and probably most gun hatin' libtards and the treehuggers as well.
What I wonder is when they are going to ban the score being kept, followed by the game allowing an opposing team (and eventually even the term 'team' itself....)
To: ProtectOurFreedom
Good, those Indians were a blood-thirsty lot and it is time we stopped idolizing them.

What is missing is all reference to Indians stealing horses and women from each other, perpetual warfare and murder between tribes and bands, treatment of their women as beast of burden and worse. I too would drop Indians as mascots but not for the common PC reasons.

What's to keep the fans from showing up at the games in Indian costume? That happens for a while, then eventually fades away. I still see the occasional "Bring Back the Indians" cap or bumper sticker at Stanford football games, but its pretty rare. Sooner or later, we are all assimilated into the great diversity blob.
